What's going on fellas. I was shopping for an Audi A4 after my 96 SE-R got flooded :( when I came across what seems to be a steal. A red 97 SE-R w/ 36K miles on it for 7,500! Needless to say I changed my reason for being at the dealership real fast. They car looks and runs flawless. There is one strange thing I've noticed about it though. The car has no rev limiter! I don't know how this happened. Can anyone shed some light on the case? The car doesn't look like it was ever modded so I'm guessing aftermarket ECU is unlikely. The RPM gauge seems to be working properly. I ran her to like 8,300 RPM's before I decided probably not the best idea. Any suggestions? Should this concern me other than watching where I shift? Any info would be appreciated

The motor would be in peices if you ever revved it that hi. JWT computer with the C- series cam program dont even rev that high.
Your tach is probably off

Our ecu's can only go up to 8000rpm. So either your tach is way off, or this guy got JWT or someone to program a 32-bit ecu for the car.

Could that be the reason he's on his 3rd engine?!?! :D jp

8000 rpms will not blow the motor. Andreas has custom ecus that rev up to 9000rpms. These cars are of course not stock and he stopped reving that high because the cars don't make any power up there. The tach is most likely off. My tach reads about 8100rpms at the JWT rev limit which is set at 7800rpms.

I wasn't implying the 8000rpms was what blew his motor. On his 2nd engine he did the 3rd to 2nd shift deal and blew the rocker arms. Well when he put the C1 cams in, there was a weak valve from the aforementioned mishap, and the new cam made the valve snap in half, or something similar in nature. I guess it's for the best now, he has a ported JDM head woohoo! Sorry to "blow up" your spot tom. :D

With my G20 ecu it will read like 7800, but it only revs 7500. Same with the stock ECU. You can get it up to 7300-7400 easy. It's misreading ***'. 8300 is ridiculous for an otherwise stock car.

i knew you had that ecu b/c..well i dont remember. i know i read a post i think about you messing up your engine b/c you mis shifted and then there was this debate about whether your ecu really didn't have a rev limiter. it was a long time ago.

I agree w/ you guys that the tach must be off. All my shift points seem to be the same as my 96 though. I don't know. Should I try swapping in another gauge cluster and see if anything changes?

You can get your current one "recalibrated" so that it reads correctly. Sounds easier than buying a new one. Don't ask me where you can get it done though I am clueless. I wouldn't worry about it, but if it bothers you, then go ahead and take one of the routes to fixing it. You can usually find a cheap gauge cluster on ebay.

does the car go faster than109mph? if so, there is an ECU in there..SE-R tachs are always off by 200-400 RPMS...

another option if your tach really bothers you is to buy an aftermarket one. the autometer autoguage tachs are only $100 and autometers are known to be accurate.

are you getting the same mph with the new car at redline as you were with your other car, i think i use to be able to hit 35-40 in 1st when i was n/a, are you anywhere near that. i havent ran 1st out since i went turbo(7800 redline)
