: What would you do to your silvia with $6,000?
SM00TH976 09-06-2002, 11:01 AM I know this is one of those annoying questions that us newbies ask all the time, but I have just started learning about 240's. the absolute first thing i am gonna do to the car is get that truck engine out of there. so the SR20DET swap is probably gonna take up at least $4,000 of the money. i will probably do the big FMIC, BOV, exhaust and intake with the engine swap, but what else do you guys think i should get? keep in mind that half of the reason that i am getting a 240sx is it's wonderful handling. i would like to address that too. i was thinking maybe some nice light wheels and maybe the tein or JIC magic coilovers. but that might put me over budget. hmm. any suggestions?
u4ikstilz 09-06-2002, 12:17 PM First off, check out www.srswap.com and click installation. That should give you an idea of the prices. Note that exhaust isn't even listed in the pricing. The Apexi N1 is a really popular cat back system. I'm gonna try to get the dual N1's if I can afford it. Look around, you could probably find an s13 red top for $2200 shipped if you look hard enough. All stock, with the fmic you should be able to do 13-15psi safely. As everyone knows the stock T25 becomes useless after that. Don't get me wrong, I've seen ppl run 11s off the stock turbo. Mainly headwork and suspension. I'm shooting for 11s with my car.
slipper 09-06-2002, 03:45 PM what year is your car? what model? Does it have HICAS? if you or one of your buddys are mechanically inclinded, then why not attempt the swap yourself? That would save you over $2000
$2000 - red top motor including shipping
$500 - clutch
$250 - starion intercooler
$150 - mandrel bent IC pipes
$250 - mandrel bent exhaust pipes
$450 - JUN titanium muffler(sorry it looks bad ass!!)
$50 - first gen Eclipse BOV
$3650 - total for motor swap alone
now i would spend the rest on handling
$600 - yokohama A032R tires mounted on your stock alloys
$1200 - JIC magic coilover struts
$50 - tension rods from ebay(these look damn good and dirt cheap!!!)
$500 - Used aftermarket LSD. A used stock N/A 300ZX LSD or stock 240sx LSD should cost $300 but aftermarket feels a lot better. Dont get a twin turbo 300xz LSD as you will also have to replace the axles also and have them shortened. If your car has HICAS then disregard this because your car will have an LSD, If it doesnt have HICAS then most likely your car will not have an LSD but check anyways. Also, if your car has HICAS, it is the first version to come out and very primative. i would go to a junk yard and get base model pieces and remove the HICAS.
$6000 - grand total
SM00TH976 09-06-2002, 07:02 PM ok, i consider myself a mechanically inclined person, but i don't have the time or the tools to do a motor swap. i don't even have a garage, so that's out of the question. turns out now it's gonna be more like $4000 so i might only have enough to do the engine swap. if i do get an exhaust it will be a dual N1. they only make them for the 240sx and the RX-7. talk about pedigree. anyway, i know about how much the motor swap is gonna cost. some of their prices were a little inflated on that page. i think i can do it for cheaper. by the way, venus auto supposedly sells red top engines for $1,500. plus i really want to put the silvia front end on the car. the car that i don't have yet. :D there is a guy selling his with nice paint and a decent interior for like $3,000 here. the only bad thing is it's an auto, but i can have that fixed when i get the engine swap.

well first of all what would i do to my silvia? if it was a silvia i wouldnt need to remove the "TRUCK ENGINE"
first buy the car is what i suggest. then drive it and see what you want to mod
peter96 09-07-2002, 02:27 AM If you go for power, don't forget brakes.:)
SM00TH976 09-07-2002, 11:48 AM i knew someone would take offense to that. but, it was in a truck first. which engine would you rather have in your car? i think the choice is obvious. and i went ahead and called it a silvia because i knew i was doing the engine swap immediately.
SE-Rious B14 09-07-2002, 01:43 PM if i do get an exhaust it will be a dual N1.
PLEASE DON'T, It brings tears to my eyes when i see that gay ass muffler (any dual tip muffler for that matter) on any Nissan. If you got a 240, you should get the phat APEX N1, the big canister one, tilted to the side, Or you should go with a phat Greddy/Skyline style muffler. PEACE

SOOOOOOOOOO i take it since your going to make your 240 a silvia your getting the engine it came with?
good job on selecting the CA18DET ;) cause thats the engine it orignally came with
the ka24e and i think the ka24de was in a car first or it could have been a frontier or hardbody but i dont pay attention to stuff like that, but it being called a truck motor means that the 350z, skyline/g35, altima, maxima, murano all have a stupid truck motor.
 maybe they should swap out that pos truck motor that only has 240-280 hp and put in the monstrous sr20det 205 hp (redtop)
slipper 09-07-2002, 02:49 PM arg i forgot brakes.... some performance pads and motul rbf 600 should do the trick. also you should consider the Blitz NUR spec or Apexi GT spec exhaust. personally i dont like the look of the dual N1's
CAMPPAIN 09-07-2002, 02:59 PM brakes = 300 total for z32 calipers pads, rotors, steel lines and misc parts.
more if yu want the rear and you would need to adapt the ebrake to work.
tension rods i would go with cusco pillow balls or tien or some other pillow ball mounts maybe monkey magic.
coilovers i would go with the zeal b6's :D
cusco- ladder bars side bars interior bar (whatever the other ones are called) control arms all around
solid rear subframe bushings
and the 5 lug swap for an extra 5-8 hp:p
but dont forget the ca to make your car a silvia! ohh and some drift option stickers, battle scars, bondo, mismatching body panels, silvia badges and trunk emblem, lhd, and a ca18det to make it a truee silvia :o
Digitek 09-07-2002, 03:16 PM Not to offense anyone but the 240sx w/ka24e is a truck engine and very slow too.
I mean its not that slow you know but comparing it to the sr20det @ 10psi w t3/t4 I doubt well i dont doubt I know the ka24e FULLY MODED won't run as it.
why do I say this? well my dad has owned a 1990 240sx since new and we had it fully moded
cams
pullies
headwork
10:1 forged arias pistos
lightened flywheel
header
2.5 exhaust
reprogrammed ECU
ect ect.
and we inclusivly took off the fuel injection system and putted in 2 .45 carbs. w/ 150hp on NOS
the car felt way better N/A with carburators (its obvious)
before we put them in the car had 125hp on n2o w/ fuel injection then we went all the way up to 160hp with the carbs 4 fogger system.
the car was doing mid mid to high 13's we never got to test it on the 1/4 mile
but on street tires it made 9.05 in the 1/8 w/ a very bad 60ft 2.6+
the car had too much power and basicly did that time on 3rd gear since 1st n 2nd were all about spining wheels.
anyways we then we broke that engine and got a sr20det and DAMN @ only 10psi it feels way much stronger than the old engine with all the mods and NOS.
well ok im finished i guess i wrote a testament LOL.
sorry that was just my story :D
Digitek 09-07-2002, 03:21 PM Ah one more thing about the price of a sr20det
I don't know why they are so expensive over there.
here I can get as many as I want for $950
but its just the rwd one...*** the FWD is very expensive...and hard to find if they were @ that price id have one :D
and DAMN i didn't know bout the sr20det engine one year ago since i have 2 friends who bought from a guy that brought 10 gti-r engines and sold them all @ $1,100
I got so mad when they told me that...he has it on a 4 door classic sentra...that shit runs hard hehe.
SM00TH976 09-07-2002, 05:22 PM well i haven't seen the dual on a 240 so that could change my mind. plus i've heard the apex is pretty loud. i don't want the car to be obnoxiously loud. and i don't really want the same exhaust as everyone else has around here. they all have N1 knock offs.
CAMPPAIN 09-07-2002, 09:24 PM obviously you dont surf much of freshalloy and see there are alot of turbo ka's and there are alot of people with the sohc putting down very impressive numbers.
i can tell you one thing my 240 with the 140k mile engine feels faster off the line than my 99 33k sentra se-l
that is until the higher rpms when the sr will eat the ka. and of course a turbo engine will make more power all motor there are some impressive numbers though i forgot who does full race engines for ka's but their is a shop that iirc had it in the 11's even for sohc's
as far as exhausts go with the 5 zigen

so back to the vq35de thats a truck motor in the 350z right?
slow ass pos 350
Digitek 09-08-2002, 01:32 AM Well Nissan makes very nice truck and SUV engines :D
And to tell you the truth im just an sr20 fanatic i don't like any other engine other than the skylines too from the nissan.
sr20de is a good engine...the DET too
the honda b16a - b18a ect they are good engines too.
and yes i know the k24 can put some really impressive power on turbo or NOS...the NOS K24 we had ran really good @ the street almost no one could grab us. but anyways
N/A VS N/A sr20 eats it and turbo vs turbo...well it all depends on the money the det and the k24 have in them..
but to tell you the truth I don't really know who would win if there was a k24 @ 10psi and a DET @ 10PSI.
id have too see it. there is a slight chance the k24 wins since it has more torque but then again the det might get him on 3rd gear and fly throu him...i dont know its a must see to confirm :)

dont worry i am pro sr20de also i just like playing devils advocate, plus i give credit were credit is due the ka holds it own in na and turbo form. labeling an engine cause of its chassis is stupid though thats the only point im trying to get across:cool:
but if i had an option i would go ca over sr any day
se-riusb14 09-11-2002, 01:59 AM If your getting the det first, than go with an RS*R exhaust, if you can find one.hehe I've heard it, its just plainly the sickest sounding exhaust i've heard for any sr20.
