: suspension noises??? clutch maybe?

maybe you guys can help me with this..

my car has been doing this for a while but it keeps getting worse and worse with every launch.
the other day when i cranked my car it felt like something heavy had rattled loose and was hitting something solid in the engine bay, i could feel it in the steering wheel and in the floorboard at idle.

tonight at the drag strip i did my burnout and it started doing it again, but when i bumped the clutch to stage, it stopped and went back to normal.

also, when i go down the road and i turn left, the weight shifts onto the right side of the car making a noise similar to the kind you get if you put a baseball card in a bicycle wheel. it only does this when turning or when using the engine to slow the car down, like when you downshift.

i think it may be the cv joints, but the boot isnt busted, and that doesnt explain idle vibration, if i push the clutch in, it stops, i kinda thought it may be that a peice of the clutch had flew off or something but it still grips fine.. any ideas??

ill take any explanation at this point.... thanks

Hey sorry I don't have an answer for you....I just wanted to say that I have the EXACT same problem in my 92 se-r, only I bought the car like that so...who knows. I have been told that the cv's in my car were bad though hmmm. It totally sounds like a peice of the car is rubbing up against the tire. I've been reading posts about noises and shuttering, and heard different things like lifters not charging up quick enough, oil to thick....possible I guess, and the noise in my car eventually goes away after driving for about ten to twenty minutes. Well I'll definately repost when I figure out the problem (I haven't even looked for it yet). Do me a favor and do the same please, and hopefully it's something stupid like the plastic in the fender wells or something...I don't know.........later bro.

Have you changed your stock engine mounts yet? That is what it sounds like to me. If it is unsually hard to get in gear it is definitely the engine mounts.

hey thanks for the response, well I don't usually have any problems getting in gear, but i'll definately keep a watch on that. I'm waiting on some money right now, and I think that's when i'll dive under the hood. but until then i'm trying to just get as much info as possible and every little bit helps....thanks again.

man, i didnt know anyone had replied yet, didnt get the email.

im thinking its not the mounts anymore on mine, i took a floor jack handle and held it up against the bellhousing and put my ear on the other end, i can hear the noise really well through there, the more and more i listened to it,,, i think it may be something like a release bearing or something. mine also quits doing it after about 10 -20 minutes, but it will do it under hard turning, or downshifting and letting the engine rpm's slow me down..
its just a real odd problem.. now, the plastic in my fenderwells do have a worn spot on them, and that would explain the rubbing noise while turning, but it doesnt explain it while its setting still,
Robert, try putting some chalk or something on your inner fenderwells, then go through some hard turns, to see if the tire may be rubbing. i hope we can figure this one out

yeah Im thinkng it's something internal also, I totally looked over the engine today and didn't find anything obvious...however I took a look at my cv's today and well their SHOT! so I don't know. anyways I'm getting pulleys, intake, header, and exhaust within the next week or so so im sure that'll be able to give us a much better idea. it looks like we might have found the se-r's weak link or maybe just a weird coincidence but whatever the case, they are the exact same problem. i'll get back with more info.

ive always heard the trannies are the weak link.. i just hope its someting thats not too bad... what kind of header and an intake did ya get?

well i got a cheap w.a.i. just for now..like I said i just got the car so im dying to just open it up, but i think im going to wait for the cold air. i just went with the quickest cheapest way for now. and the other stuff will be purchased w/in the next week or so. maybe this is a good time to ask what you think about the pacesetter vs. hotshot/stillen etc., and i need it to smog in california so c.a.r.b #'s are a must. i've heard good and bad about all of them. what do you think? also unorthodox r pulleys, 2.5 exhaust. these are what i've decided on, 1000 $ to spend most horsepower gains?

well, i like the pacesetter, of course i have nothing to compare it to since ive not owned any of the others, but is a good bang for the buck, just dont expect show stopping looks. unorthadox pulleys are on my list too, my cousin just got a 2 piece set, and me and him have the same setup other than that, right now he is a tenth quicker than me on the eighth.. i wouldnt go with a 2.5 exaust, go with 2.25 max wait til you get the bigger engine mods for the 2.5 exhaust. youd probably lose alot of bottom end with 2.5

just what i wanted to hear, i figured 2.5 was too much. i just seen that on a lot of the cars that i looked up, but i had the same thoughts. saves me some money though. i think ill get a clutch, flywheel, pullies, and header then. so im looking at about 1500$
i ran just a header and intake on my last car and it was very effective. right on man thanks for the info, ill keep you posted w\ the mods. later.

i had a similar problem on my nx, but mine was prolly a weird case, my splash gaurd on the passenger side either had loose screws or missing screws that in conjuction with bad mounts caused alot of weird noises. when i would slow down or downshift the engine moves forward some so that would cause my belts to rub the splash gaurd and so would my wheel when i turned, eventually the splash gaurd gave up and flew off and got caught in my belts on the way to the shop to have my front bumper replaced of all times.

replaced the splash gaurd with anew one byebye many odd noises.

ok, now that sounds very possible. like i said, hopefully it's somthing easily fixed like that.(except motor mounts) i'll check that out too. thx.

makes me wish i had splash gaurds hehehe, im just gonna keep driving mine like it is for a while, i dont think its hugely important if the car is still going.... i am supposed to be getting my short shifter in soon, so when i do my install ill have a good look around at everything.
