my car is a 91 with 96K miles. the engine still runs good as ever, but i never had a valve adjustment done. just exactly what kind of noise should i listen to? is that particular noise the only reminder that my valves are out of spec? tia.

You never need to adjust the valves. That's the purpose of the hydraulic lash adjusters.
