: Blown Spec V
AaroNX 09-09-2002, 06:20 PM Know anyone that has blown a SPEC V yet. My friend did saturday night at the drag strip. He did a run and the car was smoking real bad when he parked it. The car was a quart low on oil so we added more. By the time we made it back to the house it had burnt two more quarts. Smokey as hell. This morning he took it to the Dealership and got about half way. He stopped and checked the oil, he said there was none on the dipstick. Then he pushed the clutch and let the car roll back and oil shot everywhere from under the car. He ended up having it towed to the dealership. All of this on a car with 6k miles, and the sticker in the door jam says January of this year.
SR20steve 09-09-2002, 07:55 PM thats scary. My buddy drew bought a spec V and he hasnt a problem with it.
Its311Pete 09-09-2002, 09:03 PM Sorry about your bud's Spec V. Did he initially run it low on oil?
Did he acidentally hit 1st. instead of 3rd. ? Is the Stealership gonna replace the engine?
I've had no problems with mine. It used a 1/4 of a quart before the 1st. oil change...notthing to be alarmed about.
BORNGEARHEAD 09-09-2002, 09:11 PM Proper breakin?
sleeping 91ser 09-09-2002, 09:21 PM I hear you have to break it in for like 5000 miles, maybe it wasnt broken in properly.....
Sean
AaroNX 09-09-2002, 11:52 PM OHH trust me the car was NOT broken in properly. It has less than 6k miles and all 4 tires are already bald. The boy is 19 and could really car less. He is actually an experiment of mine. I am trying to make him sane. I was actually getting somewhere teaching him the whatnots of the car, but the motor messing is taking a big blow on the project. He is really mad about it. I told him that he should expect it from the way he treated it. He really loves the car he just doesn't know how to take care of it. He can actually drive it good though, as far as speed goes. I am sure that his rich grandad will make them either give him a new motor or a new car. I told him that if he gets a new car to make sure that it is the 03 model since they supposedly changed the gear ratios. By the way the car was paid for with CASH. As well as his brothers 03 Altima. In the same day too.
SR20steve 09-10-2002, 01:55 AM sorry but kids like that should be driving a civic ex with big chrome rims, or a mustang GT not SE-R's damn shame
AaroNX 09-10-2002, 02:03 AM To be honest his last car was a Mustang GT. I don't see your point though he isn't a ricer or anything. He really wants to learn. So far he had an AEM CAI, cheap Ractive muffler that was black and looked stock, painted the stock 17's black, and debadged the car. He also removed the stock sub from the trunk. He was saving money to buy springs and a header.
Mel E Bog 09-10-2002, 02:58 AM I remember reading in the Freshalloy sentra forums that there were a few people that have already had to have their motors replaced. You might want to compare what he went through to what they went through. Hope that helps some.
Mel
Limited Slip 09-10-2002, 05:36 AM sounds more like "user error" to me
nx2kracer 09-10-2002, 10:42 AM I have 17,000 miles on mine with no problems whatsoever. I had it out on VIR's road course at 1,000 miles and was pushing it hard. The car is till running fine.
The Spec V's (at least the 02 models) take around 10,000 miles before the rings are fully seated. During this time the cars burn a lot of oil and the oil must be checked at least once every full tank of gas. My car stopped burning oil around 10k mile mark and hasn't burnt any since. I'm thinking he let it get low and pushed it too hard when it was low on oil.
Mike sr20de 09-10-2002, 11:55 AM man, that sucks! why should you have to baby a car check up on it for that long a period! they should have just left the sr20de and added the T. Do they give you those instructions at the dealership? I really like the spec-v's but if it had the DET in it I would love it.
just my .02 no flames please.;)
eric96ser 09-10-2002, 12:09 PM I've heard of QR25 owners having the cat material on the header breaking loose, and the motor is sucking this in. Hopefully the dealer will replace the motor, but with 4 bald tires, I'm not so sure.

Well this is one of the first encouraging things I've read about these cars. I have a close friend who is considering buying one, but he found the thread about the cars burning oil and shyed away.
AaroNX 09-11-2002, 12:18 AM The car was very nice. It was pretty strong as well. I don't like the fact that it messed up, but I guess something would have broken eventually anyway. Oh by the way, the rich grandad found out he messed the car up at the drag strip and is pissed.
QR25DEspecV 09-11-2002, 12:29 AM no probs yet here, loving everybit of my nissan.
BUTTER 09-11-2002, 03:42 AM Hey Steve what did I tell you about the break in period. Hopefully Drew has been going easy on it and checking the oil.
Toolapcfan 09-11-2002, 10:21 AM Unless that kid removed the CAI and Ractive muffler, good luck getting them to honor any warranty at all. Most times if you fool around with that stuff you void your warranty, plus they're not going to like that he debadged it and that the tires are bald. If they pull the engine and it's got telltale signs of neglect or abuse, they're gonna tell him and his grandpa to pack sand. Sorry, but sounds like he's a dipshit and is paying the price for beating on his car, and rightfully so. I don't care how much money his granddaddy's got coming out his ass, I have little to no respect for people that abuse things like that, because they typically abuse people as well. It's too bad that a nice car had to be treated that way. I used to hang out with a kid like that. His mommy bought him a brand new cavalier in '97 and within a year he had put over 90K miles on it, the suspension was shot and he was bitching that it was a piece of shit. He wanted me to drive it and surprisingly it ran pretty well, despite the ride was crap. I bet he didn't have the oil changed more than twice during that year, maybe 4 times at best. I told him his car wasn't worth shit anymore because of the mileage and that the engine was already spent for the most part. I was glowing inside, because the kid abuses everything in his life and I was glad to see him face the results in his car. And he wondered why I didn't hang out with him anymore.
Hopefully HE gets to pay for his next car. Until his own hard earned money is on the line he won't treat any car with the care and respect necessary. Hopefully he only ends up trashing cars, not himself or somebody else. Rich Grandad should walk away from it and let him deal with the consequences of his actions on his own.
