Hi guys,
95 SE-R here, low miles, no mods, no problems...
the check engine light is staying on... how do I go about
checking to see if there are in trouble codes stored?
I know when my SRS light came on last winter somebody on here told me how to clear it using the door jam light button with the ignition turned to on...
Is there something that simple to see the trouble code flashes or do I have to get under the dash and access the ECM?
thanks in advance,
Marcus

Yeah you do. It's really easy though. Get a 10 mm socket, unlose two bolts behind radio area on the floor. Once you have moved the black plastic piece you can now access the ECU. Get a flat head screw driver and read the instructions on the front of it where the screw is. Key must be turned to the on position without starting the car. I believe you turn it once clockwise wait 2 seconds or so and then counter clock to put it in diagnostic mode. Get up and count the flashes. It will be slow then fast. Write it down and come back and tell us what you get. Or you can PM me. After which you should turn it back clockwise to rest the light and then counterclock to put it back into regular mode. Don't forget to read the front of the ecu to make sure I've got my directions straight ;)

slow96R,
Cool, thanks for the quick reply! I'll do that tomorrow when it's light out... poor student here, no garage to work in :(
I'll get back to you with the code... I do have a code list from Chilton's but could use your feedback on what to do once I know what's wrong. I grew up working on old british sports cars with NO complex electronics... so all this ECU type stuff is new to me!

OK, all done. The flash code was #36 (3 long flashes, 6 short flashes). This corresponds to a EGRC-BPT valve problem.
While serching http://www.se-r.net/car_info/problems/ I found:
PROBLEM: You get a check Engine Light.
Affects: 200SX SE-R 5speeds only
You get a check engine light on the 200SX SE-R 5speed that doesn't go away. Checking the error code reveals that the EGR-BPT (backpressure valve) failed (Code 36). Replacing the EGT-BPT_ doesn't make it go away.
Have the EGR tube replaced. The original EGR tube diameter was 10mm letting too much EGR in, setting off the check engine light. Nissan changed the tube to 8mm which seems to resolve this problem.
...So, I think this is the problem. My next question is, where is the best place to pick up a 8mm tube to replace the 10mm? Is this a rubber hose or a metal tube? Easy of difficult to do by hand?
thanks,
marcus
