: Blew my motor
boggie1688 08-12-2009, 02:20 PM Well my first time out at the track, thunderhill raceway in Willows California. It was amazing, and the nx2000 was smoking a lot of the cars. I guess it didn't like the heat, and the redline all day long so it decided to send a rod through the bottom. :(
How do you guys keep your motors in good shape? What precautions do you take? How did you build them up? Also anyone know a good place to get a cheap sr20de?
budgetNX 08-12-2009, 03:19 PM are you in sac?
does your engine loooook like this:

boggie1688 08-12-2009, 03:27 PM Ouchie! That one looks pretty fun.
Mine blow was the bottom rear of the block. The tow truck drive pulled up and told me I had a rod hanging from my engine.
budgetNX 08-12-2009, 03:30 PM as far as keeping your motor safe.
regular oil changed.
after i did a vacuum coolant flush. my temps were alot lower. i guess it just broke loose some build up in mine. who knows.
I would recommend Attarco if you are in NorCal for a motor. Don't go to Venus for a regular DE.
chris101 08-12-2009, 06:59 PM having put about 9k track only miles on our p10 and being on our 3rd engine (1st engine was bad when we bought the car so never seen track use at 195k)... 2nd engine went bad because of missed shift so it was user error but that motor had over 8500 track miles on it!!! ..NOW we are on the 3rd motor (2nd for track duty) and here is what I can suggest
a) Install a water and oil temp gauge (one well known and reliable and install it correctly).. we prefer analog to digital (more accurate IMHO)
b) also install an oil pressure gauge (this will often be your first clue to a problem other than oil and water temp IMHO)
USE ONLY synthetic oil.
If you don't have a cat any more, we really like rotella 5w40 synthetic
Change the oil BEFORE and AFTER every track day event (excessive oil changes are better than too infrequent in our book)
Make sure you have done the basics like have either a newer radiator or good aftermarket radiator.
Do NOT use 50/50 for track but use water and water wetter (helps run cooler)
..that should get you started.
boggie1688 08-12-2009, 07:26 PM How much oil do you normally put in? Slightly over full?
Also any recommendations on where to buy a new one?
Rockwood 08-12-2009, 07:37 PM 5 quarts of Mobil 1 (10w-30, 4 quarts without an oil cooler), oil cooler, good radiator and gauges to tell you when it's about to explode. :D

lol i never actually took a picture of the back of that block. the whole on the back was 5x that big. it was awesome!

those 3 are awesome suggestions. even though ive never had the opportunity to do track days, i have helped build/set up ALOT of roadcourse cars at fast1motorsports.
fyi. as soon as you loose oilpressure, especially on the track, game over lol
chris101 08-12-2009, 11:42 PM with the missed shift, it was funky cause the oil pressure wasn't lost UNTIL he slowed down to pull out into the pit lane and was very low on speed.. but yeah, the engine was already done so it didn't matter.. you know the moment you miss a shift (its beyond obvious---haha)
we overfill by about 1/4 qt of oil FWIW but do NOT have an oil cooler.. not yet anyway.. thats going to be an add-in for the 94 sentra PTE car we are building though I think..

Ron @ (800) 598-3535 @ Soko and there still is a SR20 Forum discount, and ask for a really clean motor.
See results of motor I bought here:

Get all your bearings and pistons/rings treated with WPC by teammfactory.com. Your engine will run cooler which will keep temps down. A thicker all aluminum radiator will help also. This will be my plan for the next car anyways.

Dangit! And I just bought a motor from Soko.
SuperblackZ 10-08-2009, 05:43 PM Add a Koyo Rad. Worth the weight and cost. Heat is your enemy. Water + Water Wetter. I use a 25% coolant mix only because it's a DD car and I want the other properties of the coolant. If I ever did end up spewing it on the track, it's roughly 75% water.

Same here on the +1/4. Cooler also on my to-do list for at least my primary car. Been using the Rotella Syn 5W-40W all year and it's working out well. I do change it after track use and again before next outing, and sure that may be a waste but it's a cheap waste and always running fresh oil on the track cannot be a bad thing. If I ever get reasonably caught up I want to do a UOA on the Rotella.
