Needing gas today, I stopped by the local Quick Trip after work. I'm a regular customer here, so I know the pumps by heart. I threw in my debit card and went through the whole process in a matter of seconds. Since I have 17 degrees of timing on my SR20, I pump the highest octane the gas station has (91 octane). I pressed the 91 octane button and I start pumping. For some odd reason, I looked up and noticed something funny. The selector button was on 86 octane! Immediatly I stopped pumping and hung the pump up. Thankfully I had only put in .1 gallons. I started again and made sure I selected 91 octane, and I had no problem this time.
I remember pressing the button, so the pump had a glitch. In my case, that could've been a very bad glitch. I was pretty pissed for a little while, but I got over it.
The point of all of this? Make SURE you're pumping what you want to pump, folks. Double check. I know I'm going to from now on. This just proves that I can't trust gas pumps. :o

i put 87 in my car all the time with timing at 17.. it's fine because the timing is still within factory range.. don't worry so much.
now putting diesel in might be an issue.. hate it when that happens.

When i first started driving i almost did that, but i couldnt get the nozzle in my tank. In NC that diesel nozzle is a little bit larger in diameter so it will not fit in the normal gas tanks. Is it like that everywhere? I thanks GOD for that! or i prolly would not have a car..

LOL...watchout Monsoon, that 87 octane is poison!!! :D
I put 87 in my car all the time. I really dont notice any difference. Now with an ECU, or a turbo car, you gotta put the good stuff in.

This is the last time I listen to the SERCA region exec.
Brad told me that, since I upped my timing, premium was a must. Ohh well. I got pissed off for nothing. Why does that happen so often? ;)
