: Car in trouble
Laxman2791 09-27-2009, 01:07 PM hey guys...my car has been acting up the last couple of weeks. It makes a whinning sound like a supercharger when i drive. It stays with the rpms (i accelerate and it gets louder, and when i brake, he gets quieter) . Also, when i start the car up, it makes an annoying sound at idle. Like squeeking/ light rattling noise. It sounds like it is coming from the front right near the passanger headlight. In the general location. Does anyone know what it might be?
Also, i don't know if this can be related, but whenever i put my car into neutral, my car drops to 400-500 rpms. It feels like it's about to stall out. My car idles at 800-1200 rpms. So I know something is wrong. Sure enough, last night my car stalled out when i put it into neutral....twice. Once when i had it in gear and once when the clutch was all the way pressed because i had a feeling it was gonna stall. I don't really feel comfortable driving it now b/c i dont want to stall in an intersection. I plan on changing the spark plugs, oil, and power steering fluids.
If anyone can help, thank you very much!
chriscar 09-27-2009, 01:22 PM Sounds like our power steering pump is the culprit. Does the tone change if you move the steering wheel when sitting? Easy check is loosen the PS pump to give you some slack on the wp/ps pump belt so it doesn't get driven when the car is idling. Check the level of your PS fluid first.

Laxman2791 09-27-2009, 01:43 PM i was thinking maybe that..b/c as i waited for my car to warm up the other night at work i figured i would turn the wheel alittle bit to see if it made a noise and it did. i'll check that all out.
any ideas on the 2nd problem? and do you know bill, tall blond kid. from Ronkonkoma?
chriscar 09-27-2009, 01:51 PM I know Billy, I used to own the house next door to him. And I sold him his B14.
Start with the basics on your idle issue. Vacuum leaks, IACV setting, tune up parts, dirty air filter etc.

Laxman2791 09-27-2009, 01:59 PM yea i was just at his house the other day..we're good friends and he told be back when i first got the car that your really knowledgeable..haha..
do check for all that, do i need to go to a shop, or is that all i can do at home..i don't really have any tools, just wrenches and sockets.

Laxman2791 09-27-2009, 02:39 PM haha...well, i added power steering fluid and the sound went away.. and when me and my dad ran up to advanced auto to get oil and spark plugs, nothing happened with the stalling or anything..he purposely stalled to get me whiled up saying SEE, but he said he did it..hahaha...so i'll check everything still tommorow or when its nicer out...thanks alot!
97SR20DE 09-27-2009, 09:32 PM My alternator makes a bad whine that makes it sound like a vacuum.
Laxman2791 10-08-2009, 11:43 PM can someone give me a diagram/picture locating the IAVC and the TPS ..i don't know where it is, just on/near the throttle body.
Laxman2791 10-12-2009, 12:41 PM nvm..i looked all on google and found it..i cleaned it as much as i could, and put it back in. Maybe i should clean the throttle body? When i took the IAVC off, the gasket was broke so my dad made a makeshift one for now until i get a new one.
Do you guys think this would be giving me a C.E.L. because i've had one for a while now and i don't know why. The guy who sold me my car said it was obd1, so i dont think advanced or autozone checks obd1. Any help on that guys?
rubenzzz 10-12-2009, 02:07 PM My junkyard alternator is making a whirring sound from time to time too. annoying as hell.:(

that sound could be from a worn out belt...or a belt that need more tension cause its slippin on the pulley.
to the OP: do u have the ac compressor on ur car? when they go bad they make all kind of weird noises.
Laxman2791 10-12-2009, 03:41 PM haha...well, i added power steering fluid and the sound went away..

it wound up being the power steering fluid being to low. But the AC was my next target if the p/s wasnt the problem. My problem now is the stalling problem. But thanks anyways ! haha
Laxman2791 10-13-2009, 04:02 PM so i cleaned out the iavc(iacv?), and got a new gasket for it..But, i still stalled...so, any clues to what it might be?
iNISMOpowa 10-13-2009, 08:22 PM check all vacuum hoses and make sure they are in good condition, secured tightly and not dry rotted.
Laxman2791 10-16-2009, 01:52 PM i just got back from pep boys and they scanned the car for my c.e.l. I have the code p0500 ( vehicle speed sensor) . Do you guys think that would cause the stalling?
v1rg1n1azf1nest 10-16-2009, 02:35 PM Seeing as how it is in the transmission, I could def see it being a possibility, although I'm not sure exactly how...look over your wiring to see if the connection is bad or try swappin in a different sensor and see what happens...it's very simple and may solve your issue!

Turned out all the noise was coming from my AC compressor... i just bought a shorter 4 rib belt for a '91 Sentra 2.0 w/o AC and bypassed it. No more noise. And only cost me $9.87 from Autozone.
Laxman2791 10-18-2009, 05:03 PM i dont know if its related, but when i went to go start up my car today, it struggled alittle bit. Ran fine, then i put the clutch down b/c i put into neutral b/c i wasnt ready to accelerate yet, and the rpms went down to 0, then my car started to buck, so i put the clutch down and put it into first thinking i would just start the car and go, but as i did it, it came back to life and started to go again....i have a feeling none of this has to do with the speed sensor.
