: SR20DET AWD on a B13... Ideas
Wezel-7 09-15-2002, 04:44 PM I was thinking of a crazy way to stand out from the crowd with the SR20DET install and figured a way to maybe make a car go fast, very fast with the right approach. I intended by asking this question here to get a idea from you turbo monkeys, people of the spooling world of why it could, would or won't work and even if I tired what I might need.
I'm not 100% sure in what car the JDM AWD tranny comes on what motor so I figured I'd start asking to get a plan for maybe a future project, my semi plan give my car a turbo SR20 then do a shit load of customization to get a AWD in it, and while that car is in the works have a nice little SE-R classic to drive around or something. Then if all goes well I could have a potential very fast sentra when the motor is completed I will do a full skyline kit with SE-R interior put in recover everything and paint the car with a strong new color from the sheet metal up.
Now your all saying that’s alot of money well your prolly right but I'm 18 with a 1.6 in a 1991 XE modded almost all the way out and I want more…more…more. Every day that goes by I learn something new and doing this now having a plan now I could have fun with this old underpowered car and make people say what in the hell did you do to your car, Lets say 19-20 I'll be like its just a sentra motor man if you wanna look you can.
Well now for the unbelievers to flame go ahead Its just a idea, but I have a really good mechanic that would almost love to make my car his project car for his new shop he's getting ready to open. So to anyone with a good positive response thank you.
Someone told me dreams could come true, so go find’m out there before your dream is just another lost idea.
TUNED200 09-15-2002, 04:58 PM good luck, a few of us were talking about doing a awd egg, but it didnt/hasnt panned out. i would think things would be easy if you had a awd donor car right there to steal parts and info from, just my thoughts.

skyliner 09-15-2002, 05:01 PM Step 1: Buy a Pulsar GTi-R
Step 2: Gut your XE down to bear metal
Step 3: Cut out XE exhaust tunnel
Step 4: Rebuild tunnel large enough for exhaust and driveline
Step 5: Fix Pulsar suspension into XE front and rear (fabrication
required)
Step 6: Install motor , driveline and associated hardware
Step 7: Install ECU and Harness (fabrication required)
Step 8: Replace XE components that didn't get cut welded or replaced
Step 9: Start engine and go fast
Step 10: Be famous- you just built world's first B-13 AWD
Step 11: Insert this step anywhere - go broke and lose heart
Good Luck!!!!!
Wezel-7 09-15-2002, 05:09 PM Nice response I need to start saving money, with this new job I hope get. The attitude so far is good If I did this what type of 1/4mile numbers could I see to a highly tuned but yet streetable and switchable to race could I see at the track.

Could'nt I just buy the full drivetrain?
Wezel-7 09-15-2002, 11:32 PM Bump,

Not correct. There are factory 4wheel drive B13. Not sr20 powered though, but still around.

Got pics? Or a link.
sakerocket1 09-16-2002, 03:09 PM I was just going to say that there were B13 awd from the factory I believe they are from Mexico. I also think it is possible to put on thr rear spindle and hub on a b13 susp. There was a person I remeber from a few years back that had a B chassis car in another country (i wanna say in europe or mayb australia) And had pulsar shocks and springs on it. It should work the other way too. I wanna put a DET in my hatch and make it Mid engine rear drive , using pulsar hubs I also have a plan on how to hook up the sift linkage. The first way I came up with flipped and reversed the shift pattern like this R42
531 my new way is same as stock.
llaprad1 09-16-2002, 07:08 PM Not a flame, but FYI:
This thread is brought up over and over. Whoever starts it always claims "money is no object." But I suspect this is a $20K+ project. And that reality usually stops the thread.
Search the archives, you'll see the same pattern repeating.
BTW, it was a Sunny GTS that had a SR18DE with an AWD drivetrain. Someone on the forum has a link with a picture on their website. It was re-posted a few months ago.
I'd love to see an AWD SE-R (or XE for that matter), but I believe this will be an urban legend that never sees the light of day in the US.
Hell, it might actually easier and cheaper to import a Pulsar GTi-R (which is near impossible, financially).
Hien-eken 09-16-2002, 07:36 PM a FWD turbo se-r not good enough for ya?
jnk5y 09-16-2002, 07:43 PM There was an AWD b12 hatch. :)
Wezel-7 09-17-2002, 12:43 AM I understand you guys completely, but I'm saying I found a guy that is going to do the work free because he loves this car and this idea. He would take my car and make it his toy, a concept/customization and fabricate whatever to get it to work. By doing so he would turn a mildly looking Sentra into a beast of raw super power for sure but going fast is nice but I want to have it reliable too and 20k seems high but in the long run if we do all we plan on doing it will be near that I imagine but it will be the fastest SR20DET AWD in the states considering the fact there is none well there you go, Id be original which is my goal on top of that It's still going to be a street able car some what also I want to be able to just flick a switch or two or it a button for a different program and go from Street to Full Race now I know this sounds ludacris but with time money a great set of brains (meaning a lot of people not just myself and my mechanic Ron) and resources you can achieve almost anything.
Go ahead and flame but I don’t see any reason we shouldn’t try, Do you? (Not directed at any one person)
llaprad1 09-17-2002, 12:56 AM If you really have unlimited free labor, cool.
Now source yourself a drivetrain from a 91-9x Sunny GTS. That will get you the easy stuff.
Search on:
www.se-r-list.org
There have been several guys over the many years (since Ive been a member in the mid-90s) to have planned this out.
You may find their unfinished plan of attack on there.
Wezel-7 09-17-2002, 08:17 AM I think I need a good resource on parts I need some one close to FL or in FL so shipping won't be so much all the time, now do you think Andreas down in south FL would or could be a good resource? I need an advisor for my mechanic for little information and big information whatever it may be. I want to get suport from the big people from the forums the people with all the knowledge about this subject what I'll need and such. If I did this it would be something new and not done before, I'd be like a baby Skyline.
Toolapcfan 09-17-2002, 11:51 AM If you're seriously going to pursue this, I'd buy an SE-R to start out with, it'll make a few things easier, plus you'll have the SE-R interior you wanted. Since you're essentially going to be scrapping the drivetrain and suspension, mileage is no big deal. I'd look for one with a decent body but maybe has a blown motor or something that you can pick up cheap. Then you can continue to drive the XE while the project develops.

Good call I can't believe I didn't think of this first but now I have the pleasure of locating a wrecked or broke down SE-R where I think I know where a few are in town and my mechanic Ron happened to work at junkyard, where I know there are two for a fact so maybe now I have a SE-R body!! To work with so well see. I'll talk to Ron and see if he can get a deal with his old junkyard boss guys! Sweet Dude I really like this Idea cause I can still play with this XE which is very tuned and would make a lightly modded SE-R go whoa... I have beaten a SE-R at the track a couple of times but well see what happens... I just need to save a little moolaa to get a wrecked body to tear apart I can even steal the rear and front brake hubs for the XE and injectors and whatever else little shit I can slap on to My tuned GA16DE. I don’t know whatever I can do without reprogramming the ECU at JWT, so I can save my 600$ for my Project AWD and put money into my project car! That just sounds nice PROJECT CAR from RPE - Ron Preacher Engineering - the sticker on the side of the car once finished for all the hard work he and I will put into this. Why buy new when you can make your own. So now I have a little bit of a different plan, which I think, will work for the best.
Thanks, all other suggestions welcome!
Wezel-7 09-18-2002, 01:02 PM Bump....
Any ideas? Leads on where to hunt for parts and such? Any help would be appreciated.
llaprad1 09-18-2002, 01:11 PM Have you done any searching? There is a wealth of info on the 'net for SE-Rs. Parts sourcing compatibility and whatnot is there for the finding and the taking.
Nobody's going to do the research for you. (I guess I lied...see post below)
llaprad1 09-18-2002, 01:41 PM A couple posts from searching on se-r.org in 10 minutes:

Ben Davis asked:
> Are they autos or manuals or either/or?
Mostly autos, I think. There were some manual turbo SSS cars in the older
generation (U11???) style that was the Stanza in North America, but I've
never seen a turbo SSS newer than that without an auto.
> If they are made to come in previous generation Altima frames, wouldn't the

Ben, the B13, and I think B14 platforms, as well as the P10 and P11, all
have AWD version in Japan. One problem is that the entire rear suspension is
different... for example, P11 AWD cars have struts in the back, whereas the
FWD cars are the multilink beam suspension.

AFAIK, the AWD DET is in the Bluebird and the Pulsar GTiR. I'm not too up on
all the European, Japanese and Australian models though. Having an engine
from an AWD car doesn't magically make your car AWD also, no. If it were
that easy, my NX would have been AWD too. :) If you really wanted a heavy
project, you could take the AWD tranny from the Bluebird or Pulsar GTiR and
try to fit it into your car...I don't know what it would specifically
involve, but I know it would be pretty hairy.
Wanna try it? First AWD Turbo SE-R in the U.S.? :)

It sure is interesting, but very challenging (well, duh.) You'd probably
have to route the exhaust somewhere other than the center tunnel. Sounds
like no room for a cat, too. A look under a GTi-R would be helpful to see
what sort of bracketry, etc. would have to be fabbed. If a shell could be
gotten a hold of, I suppose one could cut out the portion of the unibody
between the rear wheels and put it into a US Sentra. Or maybe they use a
subframe to mount the diff? I doubt the DETs sold here include anything
past the tranny output. You'd have to dig one up in Yurrup, Japan or Oz/NZ.
