Anyone know of a good shop in the Tampa/Lakeland area that is well versed in mounting DOT Competition Tires(Road racing tires)??? I sorta have an aversion to letting Sears/Tire Kingdom touch our R comps.

TIA

what is special about mounting these. I have a rim clamp over here and we mount some really tough tires.

generally speaking, competition tires have stiffer sidewalls than normal street tires.

plus BFG R1s are unusual tires in that the inner sidewall is stiffer than the outer one (yes they are asymmetrical, but not unidirectional).

well I have done some pretty stiff 17" tires. they were the new falkens going on a Racing Hart. Usually with the rim clamp a reinforced sidewall tire is easy, but these were a bitch so much I kept reading and re-reading the approved rim width for the tire. We basiclly had to pry these tires on, but they came on and with out damage. As far as one wall being soft and the other tough that just means putting the inner wall on will be easier that the outer which is good because sometimes the inner is a real PITA. Of course I have never touched R comps and probably can't afford to replace one if it were damaged :)

falken walls are soft by comparison.. falken doesnt make ANY R tires (no the azenis is not an R tire, and as such does not have a "stiff" sidewall)

also the stiffer sidewall on the BFG R1s is the inner sidewall.

I guess I can't do them, in fact I don't know anyone that would have a wheel clamp to do these tires. why don't you ask someone with R comps where and with what type of rim clamp the company used. Actually big question here what size rim and tire are we talking about here?

that was the whole idea of this post.. to see if anyone here has R-comps and where they had them mounted.

i got the info from one of the local SCCA guys.. im heading to Tire World in Tampa today.

we are talking about a pair of 205/55ZR14s (the ones from at 2wdblazer's house), and a pair of 185/60ZR14s (i got these separately)

these should actually be pretty easy since the wheel dia. is so small. Should be a breeze for them.

I had those mounted at a Chevron. Took 2 minutes.

I put my Si's Bridgestone S-03s on myself. They were a real bitch to put on. The outter sidewall was nearly impossible until I had a friend show me the trick. You need to use two bars instead of one to guide the sidewall over the rim guide and to hold the sidewall below the rim after it's started to rotate on. It's difficult and requires some patience but you can do it. S-03's are VERY stiff especially with a 195/50 series profile. I'm sure R compounds are probably a little stiffer but not that much more.

I guess the easiest thing to do if you didn't want carlos to help, would be to call around and see who sells these tires here locally (I'm sure someone does). If they sell them, they probably have experience putting them on.

Yeah, I haven't had much time or interest in AutoX's for awhile... I've been to a bunch of them through the years, but it get's old. Maybe now that I've got the '96 running right again I'll get back into it... as long as it doesn't conflict with Sunday Football.
