: Old vs. revised firewall motormount, ES insert
A few times in the past I've noted how the firewall motor mount insert that comes in the Energy Suspension Torque Set didn't fit my car's mount at all. I think a few others with older SR20DE cars have had the same problem.
Maybe this has been posted before and I've been oblivious, but I found out what was going on when I installed a new OEM mount this afternoon:

The mount has been revised since the car was built a decade ago.*
*Edit 2005: Maybe. I could have been sent a B14 mount. See below (http://www.sr20forum.com/showthread.php?p=1093703#post1093703).
The "fingers" of the ES inserts simply don't fit the original mount. I wish I had known that before I paid $35 for the ES set, but up close the new mount is a welcome change:

The rearward gap is gone. If you stick a screwdriver in my old mount and twist along the fracture in the rubber (not shown - opposite side), the middle section of rubber tries to close that gap.
I hope the new version lasts longer, as STS Solo2 rules require stock motor mounts. Pricey suspensions, VTEC controllers, and go-fast bolt-ons are okay, but simple polyurethane inserts to prevent wear on the drivetrain are right out. Stupid.*
*Edit 2005: the above rant was written before aftermarket mounts were allowed in STS autocross class 2003-on. See new rule:
14.10.G. Engine mounts may be replaced, but must attach in the factory location(s) without additional modification or changes. Engine position may not be changed. The volume of metal in a replacement mount may not be increased relative to the volume of metal found in a stock mount for the particular application. Solid metal mounts are specifically prohibited. Any non-metallic inserts may be used.
Anyway, the ES insert will definitely not fit the old mount, part number 11331-50Y00. I tried trimming with no success. You need the new mount (aka "rear insulator"), part number 11320-0M002. It was $46.70 with SERCA discount from Mossy (fall 2002).
Killdannow 04-05-2005, 02:10 PM Ok I wanted to revive this, and ask a question....
Has anyone ordered the 'rear insulator' from a shitty parts company, eg AUTOZONE, ADVANCE AUTO etc..
Id like to know if the es inserts will fit into their products, since ill be ordering my es mounts from them anyway...
Xse-rX 04-05-2005, 02:12 PM just buy the prothanes...there soooooooo much better
Killdannow 04-05-2005, 02:21 PM id like to, but i hate to see that everyone else got them for 47 shipped, and they want 77 from me, withoutshipping. And i cant even place an order on their website....
Killdannow 04-05-2005, 03:01 PM Ok, i will be ordering them now - after some more reading.
I didnt understand how people were saying its 'the whole mount' then referencing pressing it in. Now i see you still need factory rubber with the es mount - wtf bs is that? Thats not even a mount IMO.
Xse-rX 04-05-2005, 05:02 PM get them from lighting motorsports, mine were 57 plus tax
Killdannow 04-06-2005, 12:07 AM get them from lighting motorsports, mine were 57 plus tax
thats where im looking at...
Sentra 1.6/2.0L 91-94 All 4 Mounts Kit 14-1901 $76.70
wtf ?!?!
serious27 04-06-2005, 02:14 AM i have ordered kragen mounts and not only did they not fit the es inserts but the ripped in the first full throttle blast
MEclassic 04-06-2005, 10:58 AM I was going to post saying that Jim should check the rulebook again, because 14.10.G allows any non-metal replacement mount or insert in STS, but then I noticed that the original post is 3 years old :). In any case, just so nobody is misinformed by the first post, ES inserts, prothanes, or DIY solid mounts like mine are all very much legal in STS now.
chirpin4th 04-06-2005, 11:34 AM I know nobody asked, but I found the easiest way to remove the rubber from the old mount is to cut it with a hot wire. I just used a torch instead of electricity, and a piece of 3/32 tig wire. Heat the wire up and drag it around the mount. This is really easy if you have someone else running the torch. BTW lightening is still selling the mounts for fifty-something dollars, I bought a set last week.

Sentra 1.6/2.0L 91-94 All 4 Mounts Kit 14-1901 $76.70
wtf ?!?!
Can anyone verify that product number?
Killdannow 04-08-2005, 06:41 PM ok i called em up and thats the list price , so it was 57.xx
Justin 04-08-2005, 07:16 PM ok i called em up and thats the list price , so it was 57.xx
Incorrect, that is NOT the list price. What's on the website is. The $57 you got quoted is a special sr20 forum discount that you get by mentioning the forum. You can thank the forum for the discount. On another note, easiest way to get the mounts out is either press them out if you own a press or use a cutting chisel and cut through the inside metal ring and pop the mount out. Do an advanced search with my user name with prothane. I did a little install write up.
Thomas Reynolds 06-09-2005, 11:01 PM Anyway, the ES insert will definitely not fit the old mount, part# 11331-50Y00. I tried trimming with no success. You need the new mount (aka "rear insulator"), part# 11320-0M002. It is $46.70 with SERCA discount from Mossy.
Jim I hate to tell you this but the new mount you have is NOT the same as the old one. The mount is also physically different. I found this out this week. The new mount you have there is a B14 mount. Your old mount is a B13 mount. I have both a B13 and B14 mount in my hands and while they physically bolt to the crossmember the same, the B14 model sits HIGHER off the crossmember. The mounting 'tabs' on the mount circle are welded up in a different spot, lower on the B14 and higher on the B13. You can even see it in your pics above. Its over a 1/4" difference! Look at the front tab on both the mounts in the pics. You see the inside part just below the weld right at the mount circle? Notice the mount in the top pic's right tab is a farther distance from the weld to the circular part of the mount than in the pic of the new mount below it. Believe or not but the left tab is also different you just can't tell as well in those pics.
Interesting.
The ES inserts did not fit the OE mount that came off the car at all. I hacked away at them (urethane is hard to cut), and they still didn't fit. I mangled the firewall insert halves so badly that I threw them away and bought a new ES torque mount insert set and a new rear mount.
Mossy sent me the new mount, and the ES inserts fit perfectly. Everything bolted up like a charm, so I figured it was right as rain.
If the mounts are different rather than revised, is there a problem?

I think I paid like maybe 70 with all four MMs and 2 shifter stabilizer bushings (one for a friend) Just tell em you are from the forum.

Yeah there is a problem. It won't line up as intended. Not only that it will 'preload' the engine and mount as it (depending on whether you throw a B13 mount in a B14 or vice versa) pushes the engine back or forth from its normal intented resting position. Let's put it this way, you know the bolt hole in the mount? It is located diagonally away from the original so bad that you would have to jack the engine up just to get the bolt to start. I will take some pics to show you more what I mean.
Vibration is a big deal to me, and if the mount is preloaded it will induce more vibrations in the cabin.
adg016 07-15-2005, 06:22 AM What was the conclusion to this? We too found an issue with our stock rear mount. The inside diameter of the old mount was a quarter inch too large for the Prothane insert. Mossy got us out a new (B14?) one and things worked perfectly. What's the truth about this whole mount issue? I'd like to end all the speculation.
I would like to know also actually. reading Thomas' last post, I wonder if Justin has this problem. I know that in cars I have worked on with prothanes, the rear mount does not like to line up very well. Could this cause excessive vibration in the car?
I can only guess that the new firewall mount that you get from Nissan dealers has superseded the original mount, and that ES and Prothane used this mount to spec their inserts.
If you have an original B13 mount, you are S.O.L. It looks like other people are having to find this out the hard way, too.
