: Hrmm, Intake.. or Exhaust.
JimmyNX2000 09-21-2002, 02:41 AM oookeedoke. heres a toughey for me. i am aquireing 200 bucks, as i am selling a guitar to a friend. and, here are my 2 ideas. PR CAI, or, do my exhaust. pros and cons of both,
Intake- good for a little more HP than exhaust, will replace my ghetto WAI( bottom half of airbox off), and it makes a nice sound:D . bad things- put more air into engine, while stock exhaust chokes it ( and exhaust is kind of going bad, muffler is old and a lil rusty, and piping and all is old)
so, im leaning a little more torwards exhaust, but i dont want to make a mistake on this one. i know i would love an exhaust, as i want to piss all the V8 boys off around here with my lil Rice burner:rolleyes: . though here is what i think i would do for a setup. 2 1/4 piping ( possibly 2.5? as i will want cams in the far future, and if all goes well they will be C series:D ) and a new cat( summit racing one) and then into a universal muffler. no resonator. im thinking the muffler and the cat will muffle it enough. some mufflers i am considering are the Arospeed ones. ive heard good things about them, and i like the looks. how loud would it probably be with no resonator, just the cat, piping, and to the muffler. i like loud cars. and by loud, i mean, i dont really mind a GTi-R powered B13 with no exhaust, just running out of the turbo. it didnt bother me. i liked the noise:D so what do you guys think? am i making a wise choice? and as andreas mikos signature states, "general rule when it comes to cars, you can only eat as much as you can shit". and i think he has a point there. so, whatchya think?
AaroNX 09-21-2002, 05:57 AM Personally I would buy the intake first. If you want sound my intake alone is louder than most people exhaust, and you get a better seat of the pants feel from it. On the exhaust, I have no cat, no resonator and a Arospeed universal. It is the loudest damn thing around here. love the muffler though, I have only seen it advertised twice. It is a twin canister that looks like the Tanabe Racing medallion which I love:D
Serban 09-21-2002, 08:45 AM Arospeed works in the weirdest ways. SE-Rican had one, with no cat or resonator, and you could hear his car 5 miles away. I buy that muffler from him, put it on my car with a cat, and 18" resonator, and its really really quiet.
Jimmy, you have to realize that a turbo car running with an open exhaust will sound very different than an NA car, so if you wanna hack up your exhaust, your car will sound terrible...but if you like loud, go for it :)

Hehe, well Serban, its not like ill be taking a hack saw to my car:) id just replace the old stock exhaust with a new custom one:)
but i was just asking opinions on it. i think i am definetly going for exhaust this time, and when i get my paycheck maybe if im lucky i could find someone selling thier JWT POP charger, just to get rid of my ghetto intake setup at the moment. and i may just go ahead and throw the stock airbox back on the thing, just to be safe. but, on the exhaust again, would it be wise to buy like an 18 in. long glasspack? they arent that expensive and if thier worth it i would probably buy one. Oh, BTW, i remember hearing you, Rob, and Jonothon( SmoothdaddyFig) coming for a while away when we all met up at that wall mart before we went to the dyno shop in Tampa. not that bad sounding either. but then again, i think after you go see and hear various full Racing SCCA Club Racing cars most other cars just done seem as loud anymore:D
spdracerUT 09-21-2002, 01:09 PM IMO, get the intake; more power, it's loud as hell when you step on it, quiet when you're cruising. I did the loud exhaust thing and it got old real quick. Put on the greddy (which DOES have a resonantor after the cat) and I was going deaf! I ended up putting 36 sq. ft of dynamat in the trunk to quiet it down inside the car. You could hear me coming from 4 blocks down it was so loud. Not too bad if you're just going around town, but as soon as you hop on the highway, the droning will kill you(and make you deaf). With the turbo on now, the car is finally reasonablely quiet with the greddy but it's probably killing me about 15 whp. Need a 3" now! But to put things into prospective, my friends 4-cyl. accord with an AEM cold air is louder at full throttle than my car now.
Another thing, I'm all about the sleeper look. If I ever get a 3", I'm getting the muffler painted flat black.

MEclassic 09-21-2002, 02:01 PM A couple thoughts...
1) Where are you going to get a custom exhaust for under $200? $300 is the absolute cheapest you will be able to do a full cat-back with decent pipe. Wait until the exhaust dies to do it, exhaust does not pick up much power on these cars. A pacesetter header gives a better gain for $150 than an exhaust will for $300.
2) Are you still on stock suspension? If so, I'd put that $200 away and save up until you can afford some AGXs. If you are on AGXs, I'd spend that $200 on some swaybars. IMO, Handling mods are much more rewarding for the money than power mods on these cars, at least until you get up into forced induction.
Josh
slipper 09-21-2002, 02:31 PM i say get a pacesetter header. it will give more gains than both the intake or exhaust and your car will still look and sound stock.
Crono1321 09-21-2002, 06:45 PM Hmm Jimmy don't lissin' ta these people. Get a cold air intake and be done with it. Also, don't make a "temporary" purchase, like the POP charger, when you know you are going to want something better in the near future. Although....I could have sworn you were always the one to preach about "finish suspension and transmission before you buy any bolt ons." Hmm what happened jimmy has the power monster gotten you!?!?!?!??! MEEHEHEHEHEHEHE! j/p do what you want you have already decided, otherwise you wouldn't have posted this.

silversx 09-21-2002, 07:19 PM Intake.
FastNX 09-21-2002, 07:21 PM or you could do a homemade CAI with 3" exhaust piping anda cheap MAFadaptor and filter for about 50 bucks, then get a pacesetter....
NismoSER 09-21-2002, 10:17 PM Yo! Jimmy! FastNX brings up a wonderful point. Make a custom CAI! Or, better yet....send me 10 bucks and I'll send you my custom "1st gen" CAI. (I recently got my paws on some mandrel bent piping, so I have my old CAI sittin around.
Pics of it on the car are here:
http://www.tcnj.edu/~sysant2/CAI.htm
EDIT: Oh, and spend the rest of the money on a Pacesetter :D
OnyxEros 09-22-2002, 12:01 AM ummmm im going to have to go with an intake, if you could do that for me that would be grrrreeeaaatttt
;)
i love that movie
O
santo51 09-22-2002, 12:21 AM ok i just skimmed through sum of the post and i gotta say.....that i don't have a clue what u should do. i guess everyone has a point about the intake but you also said :
exhaust is kind of going bad, muffler is old and a lil rusty, and piping and all is old
trust me you dont want the thing to fall off and take the piping to the catalytic converter with it. (illegal) it happened to my friend and his oldsmobile. we had to string it up *** bungee cords.
on the other hand MEclassic has a point. where will you get an exhaust for $200? you gotta weight your options. its your car, we can only make suggestions what you do with it is your final decision.

You really should consider a header first. like MEclassic said for $150 there is alot to be gained.
Put the muffler of your choice on and go with a header. Or spend $350 and get a Pace header and a Place CAI... either way spend the $$ on something more rewarding than an exhuast.
JimmyNX2000 09-22-2002, 02:05 AM well, after working at mcdonalds for 8 hours tonight( i can still feel the damn hat on my head, but its not there!!!!!) ive thought about it a little. well, my exhaust is not bad enough to where it is a hazard to my car. but, exhausts are addicting. i want an exhaust more for the sound than performance. a more pleasurable driving experiece:D . going down to FL and meeting up with most of the FL guys, and then hearing all thier cars. i was in Awe. it was so nice. so, thats why i want the exhaust. now for the intake, i want the intake because i would want to get rid of the ghetto air box mod on mine. but what scares me away, is all the bullcrap about CAI's on NX2000's and then the gains of a CAI being skeptical. you can almost get the same effect by probably using ducting to a wai filter. like smoothdaddyfigs:D . sooo, what would be the best thing to do? get the CAI? OH, BTW. what the funk is up with Place Racings new filters on the CAI? they look like just shit pieces of foam! i got the new catalog in and i was like WTF? why did they do that and get rid of the older K&N style filter? any explanations on that?

you drove all the way to fl but never came to any of the all nissan meets here in chicago?!
i would go with a pvc intake might come out cheaper and easier than exhaust piping and get a ps header
or just get a cai dont get a muffler just for sound later on down the line you will grow tired of it esp if the cops hound you for it.
JimmyNX2000 09-22-2002, 02:54 AM heh. My sis goes to college in Tampa, FL. i was down visiting her and there happened to be a dyno day:) .
Crono1321 09-22-2002, 02:57 AM Jimmy you sound like a ricer all about the sound!!! :D BTW the sound gets old quick, like when you have a headache, the last thing you want is an hour drive home in your loud ass car. Sort of wish I still had my stock one on. Well..not really.

llaprad1 09-22-2002, 03:25 AM The CAI at WOT sound is waaay sicker than a 4 cyl. exhaust sound anyday (sorry guys). Esp. with the SR20DE. Take advantage of the growl of the SR and get the CAI.
I've got both. My muffler is the type with the tuneable silencer. I took the silencer off once. Once. I haven't taken it off since.
Get the CAI and find some good tunnels. Oh, yeah.
SERiousRacer 09-22-2002, 04:05 AM Well I searched around my local scene and got my exhaust 2.25" piping mandrel bent and Flowmaster muffler for $150 (The guy said he liked my car :D ) but if you could find someone that can do that u got $50 left to screw around with maybe try making a custom CAI. And yes the loudness ain't fun sometimes I drove from Orlando to Gainesville, GA with the constant humming and when I got out of my car I thought I forgot to turn my car off... took me a couple of hours to get the humming out of my head lol.:)
