hey. i just bought a 1991 nissan sentra se-r for 600 the car was sitting down for yr supposely. I just got the car home from the shop because the clutch was gone. i never driven a b13 se-r before so bare with me i was test driving n revving it today, on idle the car revs forcefully to 5-6rpms (not freely) when i drive it has the pick up feel to it n then the acceleration gets sluggish. so i guess to sums things up it has a sluggish performence. i'm thinking it could b that it needs a adjustment in timing with a new timing chain.

b13 se-r's are not rocket ships

If it's been sitting for a year the fuel is no good and it would need drive time.

Give it a little time, look at the problems, don't just think about them, run a compression test, and have fun.

You made out if you don't spend another dime on it. You could easily part that thing out for more than 600 dollars.

oh no dude, my mind set is not as that fast, my other car is a 86 mr2 n does 0-60 in 8.9 sometimes 10s flat n thats fast as shit for me. but i knw se-rs are fast then my mr2. but this is one slow, it feels like it has more hp then my mr2 but it sluggish, not sluggish like i mean slow, like slow like there's something wrong with the engine, feels like loss of power somewhere in there, also my car is having the knocking sound. but seriously it should hit the limiter on idle atleast i shouldn't have to compare it to my mr2 :L

but ok man, i already bought the timing chain kit n will drive the se-r more for a bit. then i'll get it timed right later on. is there any suggestion that might be the culprit as why the car revs slowly?

its probally your fuel. did you fill up your tank yet? how long has it had the "sluggish" feeling? you should try process of elimination before you put money into it.

well i just filled the tank half way but i bought the car like this, i haven't really driven it that much, when me n my friend when to see the car before i bought it they turn it on my friend rev it n said the engine's needs timing done, n prob need new lifters. because there's a loud tapping sound while engine running. so i guess what he said was true. :L it really wierd. i know if u go turn ur se-r on after its warm up n rev it all the way to the limiter it will hit 7500 rpms fast right? but my car takes 4 seconds to get up there n the engine sounds really loud getting there. like it's a fat kid going up the stairs

this is my car. it revs no further then 6,800 rpms :L see what i'm talking about. i'm flooring the gas pedal all the way to the floor

It's hard to say what the problem might be. Start with the simple things. Change your oil, fuel filter, and plugs. Check the ignition timing - from the position of the distributor in the video it looks like it might be misadjusted. Check to make sure that your throttle cable is properly adjusted (so the throttle is actually open when you floor the gas pedal). Could also be a clogged cat. Also check the air filter for a mouse nest or heavy clogging. Find a used MAF and swap it out to see if that helps.

It's almost certainly not the timing chain, they almost never go bad. But if someone has messed with the cams, they could be mis-timed. If the exhaust cam is off a tooth, then the ignition timing will be way off as well and the car will run like crap.

I already did oil changed n spark plugs n wires, i haven't done distributor, fuel filter or intake filter. i will take the cat out n check the distributor position n i'll check on the gas cable, i'll post another video on Saturday with these things installed. thanks i do have another spare b13 se-r maf sensor laying about in my room. ;)

Mine just started doing the exact same thing. I checked plugs, wires, has a new fuel filter anyway.

You can not tell anything on the distributor, because the cover is on, they all look exactly like that until you pull the cover and distributor cap by the way. My rotor has a crack and I will replace the cap and rotor to make sure that is not the problem.

I also checked the fuel injectors to make sure they are all clicking and they seem to be.

I also know that my mis-fire is only on the #1 cylinder, I can pull the plug wires from the spark plugs and #4/#3/#2 all have it run on 2 cylinders, pull #1 and no change.

After the rotor and cap, my next check will be either the EGR or pull and replace the #1 fuel injector.

Any other thoughts?

Check the plug wires where they're connected to the spark plugs to see if one of the ignition wire-boots has a crack the spark is escaping from and arcing. It helps to do it at night.

Another thought, you can test the continuity on the fuel injectors by measuring resistance with a multimeter. I believe most injectors are supposed to have between 10-14Ω.

I just read this thread and bet the o.p.just needed to do a good tune up. I loved the you tube vid of him doing a walk by,opening the hood, getting in,letting idle and then give it he11. I wonder what ever happened?

My end result was a combination of two issues:
- #1 fuel injector with 2 fingers broken off, so the spray pattern was off, replaced fiel injector - still a slight misfire.
- a small crack in the rotor and corrosion on the cap annodes, replace rotor and cap, run perfectly.

So fuel was slightly off and the spark was not solid, but there, now solid fuel and spark and mystery solved.

Hope it helps for anyone else.

Seems like it starts and idles fine. If it was sitting for a year I'd suspect bad fuel and/or a family of small woodland creatures living in the intake.

1st of all check the oil. an as always pull the plugs an c *** they look like. an of course check the timming it should be @ 15deg. how many miles on it? it probably dont need lifters. an for it to take about 4secs to hit 7500rpm is close but its not 4secs but it feels like it. an for the loud tapping if your low on oil it will sound like the timming chain is hitting the wall of the head an make that kinda noise, or its a bearing. good luck

The Autozone steering wheel cover is clearly the problem here, folks.

Are all of your injectors and plugs firing? It sounds like one of the cylinders isn't getting gas or spark (ticky/clattery). You should also clean the MAFS -- especially if the car has been sitting for a while...

make sure to replace the cap & rotor, fuel filter, PCV valve, and get an air filter. it's probably clogged with animal fur or nuts, or anything that can make it's way in the intake tract.

lmao  @ the comments.. i should've came back for this thread, umm me and my mechanic open the engine up. we almost threw up when we saw that infestation of devilish hell inside it. engine oil had turn into mud. yeah disgusting. but it actually turns out that the sr20's timing was off, that n the autozone steering wheel cover hahahaah, lol :squint: really? anyway so i decide to go JDM swap n this is the result :biggthump didn't beat'em i sure as hell kept next to him :) that vtaak sammnavitch
