My engine is fine right now, however, I might be taking the head off to do some work to it and I was wondering if this headgasket can be reused. I currently replaced it about 1000 miles ago and used new ARP bolts on the head.

The reason I ask is because these headgaskets do not come cheap and my guess, for being metal as same as the cometic headgaskets are, that it can be reused.

Any comments or experiences on this?

Will it be ok to use this same almost new headgaskget or should I need to get again a new one?

Thank you

Luis

I do it on Hondas all the time. Same style gasket. You should be ok. Could copper spray it for added seal.

Thanks for the offer. Please pm your best price shipped to El Paso TX 79901

A spare wouldn't hurt me at all... just in case.

This is excellent news, thank you for your input. Hopefully someone that had do it on a SR20DET can also say the same.

Thank you.

i wouldn't reuse a head gasket, too risky in my opinion!

I would agree 100% with your if it was a regular gasket, but do you think the same if it's a metal one?

I heard that Cometic says you can reuse they headgasket but I dont know about the OEM VVL metal headgasket...

Do NOT reuse the oem headgasket just buy that spare one oR get a cometics they are reuseable cometics are stronger and multi layered oem is 1 or 2 metal layers.

^I haven't read too much about Cometic but I have heard rumors of people not liking them? have you heard that? i don't know the reasons. Just get a new headgasket! It's not like changing your oil, re-using the same filter, it's the headgasket!!

Mine only has 1000 miles on it and it is a 3 layer oem VVL headgasket that I got from greg.

I got a cometic for a friend for his Honda B17 and believe me, it is thinner and more fragile than the OEM VVL

Anyhow, I felt that throwing away another 200 bucks (on again new rings and headgasket) just to open the engine to reinforce the bottom wouldnt hurt anyone :(:(:( but me) :(:(:(

Thank you for your help.

I would have to agree with most in changing the HG everytime. Its cheap insurance. I would even change it if they said they were re usable.

Ey Guey!

Reuse the SR20VE multilayer steel headgasket, no problem. Use copper spray as previously suggested. Cheap insurance. We're running 24psi builds with re-utilized VET headgaskets and copper spray. All is well.

Hey wey!

I just read this message and you just save my budget again as I know have 2 VVL metal headgaskets and I will reuse one (remove regular oem type and put this one).

Thank you bro. :biggthump

i had good seal reusing the vet gasket. after 2 times gaskt would be to deformed to reuse.

i also had the job down to a lunch hour so if it blew it was no big deal. arp studs suck. get the golder eagle studs for a gsr engine take alot to lift the head with those

Just as an update guys. Finally today we were able to get the parts together and guess what...

With only 1000 miles and lots of copper spray the VVL headgasket did not seal properly and we are having bad readings on compresion :(

We got SR20DET W10 engine

From let to right cilinder readings

135 (ok)
35 max and drops very very fast to cero (compression lost)
135 and drops fasts
135 (ok)

The car does not smoke at all so we guess it's the metal vvl headgasket that did not sealed properly. Buying a new one :(

I wanted to share this story with you guys, THE MAIN FACTORS I SEE FOR THE HEADGASKET NOT TO WORK FOR ME WERE ONLY 2

* Different engine (head and block)

* ARP Studs.

Im concluding that the surface of the new engines is a little bit diffent do the gasket preformed to the old engine surface. Also ARP are stronger so they marked even more the diffenrences on the surfaces.

So if you reuse SAME ENGINE with same parts (block and head) without being surfaced then you have a lots of changes to succed specially if you used stock head screws.

copper spray = crap

generaly metal gaskets are re-usable if they are multi-layer. Thats one of the benfits of the MLS consturction of headgaskets like the Cometic, Cosworth, etc,,, If they are single layer, it can be somewhat hard to tell. It would all depend on how it got crushed and if there are any damaged areas, etc. At that point you would have to measure thicknesses. I am not familiar with the VE gasket so IDK if it is MLS or single piece
