: just started DET, tapping/knocking??????!?!
playatx99 09-22-2002, 04:18 AM ok, its 3am, we just finished putting a bluebird in my friend's(NoClassic) 94 se-r. we pulled the fuel pump fuse and turned the motor over for like 30-45 seconds, to prime the motor with oil. then we put the fuse back and, the moment of truth. the car started on the first crank and idled ok(this is with the stock ECU, JWT hasnt come yet, we just wanted to make sure it ran ok) the problem is, there is a pretty loud tapping noise, RPM dependent, coming from the motor. we are REALLY hoping its not a spun rod bearing, but i really think that its a lifter(HVLA) that is ticking. when you rev the motor, the tap speeds up, and it is present while the motor is revving up and coming back down to idle, and i think i remember something about a rod bearing knock disappearing when the motor was revved or something. does anyone know what the noise could be???? I REALLY hope that the motor doesnt have a spun bearing, as we just got finished with all the work putting it in. TIA

Andreas Miko 09-22-2002, 10:51 AM Most likely it is a lifter, this is a very common problem when a engine is just built or has sat around for a long time. This lifter ticking noise is also what happened to me when I started my motor. Just let the engine idle and get hot, keep your etes on it to make sure it does not over heat and make sure the car is level on the ground. Also use very thin oil like 5W-30.

If the ticking does not go away after driving it a while, what else could it be? bad lifter? I have this problem now.

playatx99 09-22-2002, 03:35 PM thanks andreas, luckily today, the noise is mysteriously gone:D now time for some boosting
blackb13 09-22-2002, 04:29 PM Same noise happened when my DET went in. It was VERY loud tapping from the head area. Once it warmed up, we shut it off. The next morning, the noise was gone.
muleman 09-22-2002, 04:57 PM lifter needed to pump up sum times it can take a while
Driven97 09-22-2002, 08:12 PM Ours tapped for almost 20min. Gradually got quieter, than was gone.
charlie2020 09-23-2002, 12:29 AM It's always a good idea to bleed the HVLA when doing a swap especially if you can press them down with a finger. Nissan say they can't pump up on there own but I guess some of us just proved otherwise.
unlucky 09-23-2002, 04:04 AM they can be bled by using a small allen wrench.. or a straight pin. Push down in the hole on top of the lifter while submerging completely in oil.. you will see air bubbles come out.. after doing that a few times.. push on the lifter to see if it moves.. if it doesn't move.. then you're ready to go.. if it moves a little.. keep pumping..

Joes97turboSE-R 09-23-2002, 09:58 AM Yesterday, I got a tapping noise in my 97 SE-R.. I installed a T28 setup (about 1 month of driving on TURBO) and my motor has only 31k on it..(Orginal motor).. At idle you dont hear anything then at about 2500rpms to boost it gets louder and faster.. The car will barely boost also.. I thought is was maybe lifters or valves but I am not sure.. Any suggestions on what to do would be great.. Thanks..

dude, that DEFINITELY sounds like you spun a rod bearing. sorry dude
MarkSR20 09-24-2002, 02:00 PM On a stock DE motor with 31k original miles! I dont think that is the problem. I am going to go and take a look at the car tonight. From what it sounds, it is a rocker arm! We will have to find out!
Joes97turboSE-R 09-24-2002, 03:06 PM This sucks!!!!!!!!!!! I dont want my car to be DEAD:(
Majestical69 07-14-2004, 03:00 PM This is a post from WAYYYY back in the day, but hey..it describes my problem. I have a loud ticking at idle and it gets faster the higher the revs. But this is on a DE(T) and it JUST started doing it last night. Ive driven the car for about two days before this happened, and I had the motor NA for a lot longer than that. I dont feel a loss in power or anything, but what I do feel is hesitation. This is from a boost leak I think so that doesnt worry me. Has anyone had this problem before? It starting out of nowhere? I checked the oil and had to put in a quart last night, which it stopped for a little bit, but it came back once I went to go get gas...Started it this morning and it was worse. Suggestions???

SERprise In WV 07-14-2004, 04:04 PM Rod knock.
HawkINX4 07-14-2004, 04:08 PM yeah... it happened to me too in my old motor... i put a lil oil in it.. rode off it was fine. then i turned it off, turned it back on and KNOCKA KNOCKA
Majestical69 07-14-2004, 04:15 PM How can I check to see if it is rod knock?? And if it is, im guessing I should start looking for a new motor?
-Mike
HawkINX4 07-14-2004, 04:16 PM pull the plug in each cylinder while it is knocking.. if u pull it and it stops.. then that cylinder is bad and yeah go look for a new motor lol
Majestical69 07-14-2004, 04:22 PM Alright...here goes nothing. Thanks...
-Mike
Majestical69 07-14-2004, 04:28 PM Its still doing it so...next?
