Can you share your settings for the serial to usb adapter settings found under the properties of your adapter driver. I'm using XP.
Also what driver are you using? i think mine says profilific.

After searching till I was blue in the face I found out that all the settings for the serial to usb adapter in winxp are all good. (what ever the default settings are). If you anybody's wondering they are:

Baud: 9600
Start Bits: 1
Stop Bits: 1
Parity: none
Flow Control: none

think thats it. I had previously though my settings were wrong since my DIY consult interface/ cable was not working. I had found my problem to be the wiring right at the consult connector, my end not the car side. lol.. Works great now :biggthump
