what is a "normal" amount of metal shavings on the drain plug? I just changed my fluid and the whole magnetic ring on the plug had quite a lot of shavings, and the hole in the middle was full too... i wish i changed it sooner because the fluid didnt look too healthy.. i put in 80-w90 coastal gear fluid... should i let the plug catch more shavings for a month or so and change it again?

I change mine once a year, and I usually have a plug full of shavings. It happens.

Are the stock tranny drain plugs magnetic?

Yes, I think so. They have been on every tranny plug I've seen and I've never heard of aftermarket plugs.

Also, I'll third or fourth the "shavings are normal" statement.

When I bought my most recent NX2K about 4 months ago, I changed the tranny fluid almost right away. The fluid looked to be in pretty sorry shape like it hadn't been done in a while, and the plug was almost clean (almost no shavings). Maybe the guy(s) who drove the car for the 93K miles before me never took the car out of first gear :D.

Every other time I've done a tranny fluid change, I've had quite a bit of shavings.

Yup shavings are totally normal. I always wondered what is being shaved lol. Hopefully there is enough of it in there so it doesn't matter.

I'd change it again in another 3K miles. Mainly because Coastal Gear lube sucks A$$. Get some redline or royal purple

You're probably trimming down your 5th gear :)

I'm planning on using MT90 when I change out my gear oil, but I was wondering if anyone here has an opinion about Amsoil gear oil? All of the local VW guys swear buy it and won't use anything else. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts.
