For the archives:

I was searchin the archives/forum for information regarding the master cylinder upgrade. Most of the hits I got were questions -- not answers to the problem. So after more searching into the topics, I hope this email will help other people in the future when they search for the same topic.

As you might have realized that SMC big brake kit that utilizes the bigger bore Altima master cylinder. Here's the part number from Greg at Mossy Nissan (thanks!): Altima M/C with no ABS: 46010-2B100. However, SMC Steve removed/replaced o-ring(s) in the cylinder to get better brake proportionality. Sorry I don't know much about this so I cannot comment further.

Moreover, I was concerning if my car (NX2000) that came equipped already with AD22VF brakes in the front and stock in the rears MIGHT NOT like the new brake proportionality from the Altima cylinder, ie, I might lock the rear brakes way earlier than the fronts. Upon further searching into 1993 Altima FSM, the brake pressures are the SAME as the NX2000 master cylinder
which is 5394 kPa in the fronts, and 2452-2844 kPa in the rear. So, I will not run into such problem.

So, is it worth upgrading? I don't think the effect will be pronounced, if any. The only difference between them would be the play which reflects the different in the amount of brake fluid being pushed when you step on the brake pedal. Larger bore (1/16" larger, IIRC) Some people say about the brake modulation which is better. But I cannot comment on that "feeling" issue since my NX cylinder was leaking before I change it, and the price
for the both cylinders are pretty much the same. So I went with the larger one.

I was impressed when going from my NX to Altima MC..

Between that and Motul RBF600 Fluid my pedal is harder than Chinese Arithmatics!!! LOL

(i Just forgot to adjust the free play on my pedal, so the fronts drag after hard/long braking...quick fix ..i hope)

But yes , the difference is there, well worth upgrading.....
if your gonna do the big brakes u might as well go all out...

Hers some advice also if your gonna buy it from the auto parts store, buy it BRAND NEW from Raybestos, I tried to save a few bucks by buying a remanufactured one, but it came without the proportining valves.....needless to say the NX ones are too small and it is impossible to find any at all.. so be sure u buy the whole thing...LOL

I have the part# from pep boys if n e one needs it..

when upgrading to the Altima master cylinder, can you still use the MC with ABS, or do you have to switch over to the NON ABS M/C? I would like to keep ABS, at the same time i NEED a new MC.

well the altima mc w abs only has 2 ports for brake lines....

so if you only have 2 brake lines connected to ur stock master cylinder i would think it would work..if not, if u have 4....then youd have to ditch the abs i guess..???

bringing and old thread back to life, but i'm gonna be doing a full brake upgrade soon and i was looking on partsamerica to see which altima master cylinder i need and it comes out with two from raybestos. (search was done with 95 altima se)

Raybestos MC390139
Master Cylinder w/Power: Exc. ABS $97

Raybestos MC390140
Master Cylinder w/Power: Exc. ABS $112

what is the difference between the two? and which one did you get NX$paniard?

thanks

damn,. i just got rid of the box with the part number on it :(
I went thru Pep Boys (which uses Raybestos) and I ordered one for a 95 Altima SE w/out ABS... it cost me around 127 w/ rush delivery, so probably around 110-115, regular price...thats the best advice I can give you for now.. I will search again for the #..

shucks... thanks though and if you find it, please let me know..

i'll probably end up getting the $112 one.. maybe the cheaper one doesn't come with the reservoir? looking at partsamerica.com again, the $112 one is 6lbs and the $97 is 3.4lbs.. wonder what the difference is?

Where did you get front and rear pressures from? My B13 FSM only shows one number, 3432 kPa for the AD22 MC.
