: VE passing OBD2 inspections?

i searched and couldn't find all the info i was looking for.

i've been doing some serious reading up on all the VE info i can find. after my motor started to get rod knock barely 20 miles after a fresh rebuild, i started looking for motors. i don't care too much about performance anymore with this car to be honest. it's always been fun and that's all i want from it.
i can get a really clean VE shipped for $800 with ecu. my car is auto, the ecu is an auto VE ecu. motor comes with all sensors and accessories.

i'm in NC so i'm wondering if it would be able to pass the obd2 inspections.
also, from what i read, it's basically plug and play if you have the VE ecu and all the VE sensors and injectors...?
i'm keeping the car auto, so am i missing anything here? i'm worried that i've misinterpreted some info i've read somehow.

i used to be here on the sr20deforum all day when i used to do more with the car, in like '03. well it's about to get a second-wind.

It should pass. With the ve ecu it won't have any codes. As long as the inspector isn't a nissan sentra expert that hates them and notices you have no egr.

I don't know about the transmission. If it's controlled by the ecu, I don't think this will work. I think all the ve's came in cvt that were auto, your's is a 4 speed auto.

This is like the 5th time I've heard of people getting rod knock right after rebuilding. I'm wondering what the problem is. I think people are not getting graded bearings or something.

i want to buy this, but not if i'll never get it to pass inspections. (not worried about visual/safety)

on an OBD2 car you can't use the VE ECU. Japanese motors of this era aren't OBD2.. In fact, i don't think they've ever adopted OBD2.

What you need is your DE ECU, with some kind of tuning.

I can't find an answer about EGR codes that will occur ( VE's don't have EGR )

yeah i realized that after i thought about it.

i think i'm just looking for a decent stock DE now.

Yeah -_-
This forum is really bereft of information on a lot of things. People seem to only be knowledgeable about OBD1 cars. Grr.

Here's something interesting on g20.net:

In fact, you may want to search around on there. Consider that the late '95 to '99 G20's all came with OBD2 SR20DEs, so i'm betting more people would be doing OBD2 SR20VE swaps on there.

From what i've read, you can run the stock DE ecu, it will just be a little off.

I would not rule out this swap, man. Very intense motor. Just look at clips of it on youtube.. :)

I've had my VE since 2003, and my car always passes the OBD2 checks. You have to use a resistor for the EGR temp and redo the vacuum lines for the EGR solenoid, but that's it. Search my name in this section, and the posts you need will be in there.
