: SERCA...Falling Apart?
Jeez I was starting to wonder who was actually a part of SERCA and what they were all about when I find out the guy in charge of new membership has resigned. I wanted to get any member's thoughts cause I joined this club and got a sticker, an outdated newsletter, and never heard from anyone again. I was never invited to any track days, even though I was on the NE SERCA list, and never even heard from the Northeast rep until I e-mailed him about the meet Nate and I were holding in PA. I will not be renewing my membership.
eric96ser 09-26-2002, 05:26 PM As a lifetime member, and RE, I'm having doubts about the club too. I have only recieved 1 newsletter from when I first joined, and that's it. There were meetings every week, and now I never hear of any. I'm on the SERCA mailing list, and it never gets mail either. I don't know what's up with the club :(
Pretty White 09-26-2002, 06:18 PM As a friend of a lot of SERCA members and a person not signed up I think the fact that a lot of groups have their own meets that are not SERCA sanctioned may be one problem. A lot of guys do not have time to participate in a lot of SERCA functions. SERCA can host but so many organized meets and events. Also the fact that SERCA was a smaller group back then. I mean look at this forum. The Nissanboard and the other out of country boards linking up. Can SERCA really handle that kind of membership? Espically when we all work regular gigs?
Don't take me wrong. SERCA is still alive, it is just that a lot of people do not have the time to drive to Boston, Conn, or Philadelphia like every weekend for what seems to be just a geekout.
Well...I attempted to get SERCA involved in the large meet that we put together...but although we were told they would support it and and lobby for some members to go, It never happened. It is true that members have day jobs and things to do as do I, but when I first found out about them and visited their website, I was impressed with what they claimed to offer and how organized it SEEMED. I do give props to K. Lavin for always letting me know whats going on with him, but that's the only person who has contacted me at any time on their own free will. If there are going to be membership dues, then what do they use them for? Whereas my local car club we pay every month and we use the money for things we actually want to do. Whereas my $25 went to somewhere and someone whom I do not know. For what I have received, $25 is a bit steep. For instance...we charged like ten buck to each person who came to the meet...that money was used for site rental, porta-potties, and paper supplies and the rest was donated to a non-profit organization. You call call me a cheapo, but where has my $25 gone toward?
Big John 09-26-2002, 08:19 PM At least you guys got a Newsletter and sticker. I joined at the convention this year. I've never heard from anyone with the exception of Carlos G. and Greg V. who I just chit chat with. I have never heard of anyone from the Tornado Alley region, nor have I received any type of sticker, newsletter, or welcome e-mail. Pretty crappy if you ask me. This leads me to another thing, what the hell is going on with the convention in 2003? Some people have lives, families and jobs and would like to plan ahead for such events. Anyone?
John
eric96ser 09-26-2002, 11:01 PM John, Bruce Hearn is your Region Rep. You might want to contact him about any of this.
93BlackBird 09-27-2002, 12:09 AM I think they should rename it to SCSERO
Southern california SE-R owners :D
I remeber some rep came by when a group of SE-R owners where getting together in Tampa. He was trying to sign us up or something and telling us about all the "benefits" To bad it doesn't hardly exist in the South East. not sure about other places
slipper 09-27-2002, 12:20 AM SERCA definately died here in hawaii a while ago. it was probably at its peak when i had my SE-L around 1999-2000 but just started going down hill at an alarming rate after that. It was cool when everyone was down for the club before they started requiring a membership fee. *sigh* meeting up at the track, smoking every honda in sight, tearing it up on the freeways with only one mission, target and destroy hondas. Our first big car cruise had an amazing turn out and one thing was definately noted. NO HUB CAPS! haha. It was the first car cruise that we have seen without a single car with hub caps. Hondas eat your heart out. We also had probably the quickest overall car club here in hawaii too with a few 12 sec(although capable of a lot more, but our track SUCKS!) street driven SE-R's. The thing that took SERCA down was the dumb member ship fee. What did we get for it? A damn sticker and thats basically it! RIP-OFF!
Storm88000 09-27-2002, 12:31 AM This is exactly why I didn't join SERCA. No way was I sending $25 without knowing what I was getting or what the benefits were.
pearl2000 09-27-2002, 05:17 AM yea...i "joined" 2 years ago. i gave richard crabbe my check, but thats about it, lol. he cashed it too! but overall, it didnt really matter anyways, it was dead. Only back in like 98 was it still running fine. i think the president here, darren, got married and stuff, so taht could be part of it.
Shoes59 09-27-2002, 07:46 AM I'm curious where the membership dues went. Some people spent $100 for lifetime memberships while others opted for the annual fee of $25. Surely there must have been several thousand dollars raised. Where did this money go? Stickers and the mailing of a single newsletter couldn't have cost a fraction of the money raised from membership dues. So this brings up a very good question. Where is the money and how was it used or abused.
For one thing, SERCA fronts the money for regions to hold national conventions.
Back in the day, organizers were having to front the money themselves to reserve a track. Insurance, workers, and safety crews are an expensive necessity to get a bunch of non-pros in cars without cages on a road course. Think thousands.
Once the convention is over, the money raised from registration for the convention is put back in SERCA coffers.
At least that's how I understand it. Having one or two individuals shell out the cash from their own pockets is a lot to ask, and if some unforseen circumstance causes a loss, that's hard on them. SERCA was created to have the leverage to hold large events, and it's still very useful in that sense.
I agree on the membership side being lousy, though. That's just a matter of people slacking off or not having the time to invest in staying in touch with the members.
SE-Romeo 09-27-2002, 09:19 AM Ok, everyone on here is saying how dead it is, instead of sitting her jsut wishing it would be alive, why dont some people try to get it revived somehow, I'm jsut talking out of my ass, but it is a thought. I wqas going to join last year, the membership fee i do agree with, they need to get money to host events. I just wanted to know first what it exactly was, no I am glad I did not.

If you guys were "tearing it up on the freeway", then it wasn't a SERCA event. SERCA does not tolerate street racing, or anything like that.
se-riusb14 09-27-2002, 10:05 AM I almost joined, but now rethinking the whole idea.

Eric just so you know, alot of people say that publicly but when it comes down to it they will street race when given the opportunity. Not questioning your judgement or anything but it's sort of like an unspoken truth.
And BTW it's "tolerate"
:p

I spelled it correct.

Who holds the key to the vault? How much money does SERCA currently have? If SERCA is dead or dies what happens to that money? If members are unable to attend SERCA funded events due to logistics or scheduling conflicts how does a memebership serve those individuals if there are no newsletters or other perks offered? I received a 10 cent sticker for my $25. How is the balance of $24.90 being used and how will I benefit?
I'm no cheap ass and could really care less about the money but these are all legitimate questions that should be answered by officers of SERCA. Needless to say I didn't renew my membership. I already have a sticker, thank you

Hmm.... you had it as tollerate before. I guess you edited it. FWIW:
Main Entry: tol·er·ate
Pronunciation: 'tä-l&-"rAt
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): -at·ed; -at·ing
Etymology: Latin toleratus, pp. of tolerare to endure, put up with; akin to Old English tholian to bear, Latin tollere to lift up, latus carried (suppletive past participle of ferre), Greek tlEnai to bear
Date: 1531
1 : to exhibit physiological tolerance for (as a drug)
2 a : to suffer to be or to be done without prohibition, hindrance, or contradiction b : to put up with
synonym
93BlackBird 09-27-2002, 01:55 PM Are they Registered "not for profit"? If so they have to keep records and what not and officers named. Its all public record or should be. It may change from state to state. What state are they registered in?
