: POP Charger -VS- CAI
SE-Rican 09-28-2002, 11:19 AM Well Gang this is the deal. Last night I took off my CAI and installed a POP Charger. My dilema is that I felt my car faster with the POP Charger. I love the sound of the CAI (I put down good HP with it on the car) but I think the POP Charger is staying on.
Gang give me your feedback on this. I would like to know how you guys feel about this.
I dont think your butt dyno works! ;) We all know that the CAI put down more HP that the POP, so i really dont know why the car feels faster. thats strange. Take it back to the dyno and see what that says.
Does the POP give a little more torque? could that be it?

so dyno with the pop charger. I bet you think it feels faster because of the sound of it to the feel of it. the CAI was louder for the HP it put out. DYNO
SmoothDaddyFig 09-28-2002, 12:12 PM Rob,
You've seen my set-up and I damn sure got 10 more hp for some crazy ass reason. CAI can kiss my ass. :D I prefer a short stack POP enclosed to keep the hot air out.
Bring the POP ot the dyno in Dec!!!
I can't wait to run our cars side by side to see who's really the Boricua King of N/A !!!! LOL!!! ;)
sr20ser1997 09-28-2002, 12:28 PM of all the times ive been to the track with my cai I have always run faster with the popcharger/warm air intake.. I can't hit my 15.4 with a cai and ive hit it twice with the warm air.. hope this helps
JimmyNX2000 09-28-2002, 01:22 PM Hot Damn Rob! what a great post as i am buying an intake soon. this should make the decision making even more interesting! its either hotshot CAI or the damned Pop charger. as several people have told me about the pop charger, they think it is better because it has less bends than a CAI because its just the filter, while the CAI has all the crazy ass piping. i can see thier point. and if you really want cold air with the pop charger, couldnt you just use ducting? ( if i remember right, this is the Smoothdaddyfig method):) so, any more opinions on this?
FastNX 09-28-2002, 01:33 PM It's not just the pop charger, it's the intake piping from the MAF to the TB as well. The stock one has all those bends and a not very smooth inside, Just replacing that with a smooth metal pipe has got to be worth a HP or two
Buckwilly 09-28-2002, 01:47 PM With a hot engine and a NORMAL pop charger, there is no way you can tell me the car is faster. I would love to see that. I mean, maybe the CAI you had was not smooth as already said. But if you have a decent CAI, installed correctly I dont see how it would be worse. It just doesnt make any sense. The air is colder outside plus the force of the wind from the momentum of your car going forward also helps. I have had both and I like the CAI in performance and sound. But if you are short on cash, just get a pop.;)

I have an enclosed filter surrounded by thick a/c insulation. Completely covered. After driving you can touch it and its cold.
No heat whatsoever. I dont like CAI cause of all the damn bends.
But thats just me.
AaroNX 09-28-2002, 03:47 PM Well.........I am using both the PR CAI and the JWT pop. It works good for me and is the only way I use it.
Rittmeister 09-28-2002, 03:48 PM Smooth, can you post a pic of this setup? I've been toying with an enclosed airbox setup for a while and just haven't had the time to really work with it. I'd really be curious to see what you've done.
TIA
FastNX 09-28-2002, 05:56 PM has anyone ever thought about running short stack style intake with a cut airbox and a K&N filter? So basically a cut airbox with an aluminum pipe going from the MAF to the TB? That would be pretty sleeper looking and the cut box with the KN would probably flow almost as well a a POP adaptor...

Well gang I am sticking with what I said. I have been driving the car all day in the hot south Florida sun. The car is noticably faster. The car just rips now. I have owned the car for 6 years and I know my SHIAT!!! I know the only way to test if it is putting down more power is by strapping it down on a dyno. (I will very soon)
I have never cut any corners with my car and I have my dyno numbers to prove it. My PR CAI was in perfect condition. I honestly do not know why this is.
Figgy we can settle this little demand when you come down in December.. I promise you I will not take out my interior!! :D ;)
Buckwilly 09-28-2002, 07:20 PM I am very interested....and would love a reason to go back to my pop charger set up. Post your dyno results with and with out when you get a chance (please). Se-rprising no one else posted in defense of the CAI...since a lot of peeps here have them. Anyhow, maybe mine is different. My CAI is 3" in diameter...maybe a little bigger. I have a fat-assed cai from the early to mid 90s. Just like my pullies. Oh, and my pinstriping.
My car's mods are like a Hypercolor t-shirt....yeah they are out of style but they still are fun to play with.:D

Please, don't bring this old topic back up! I been thru this with the NX a few years ago. I hated the top end with the CAI. I was convinced that the short stack was the best way. When I swapped to a CAI I would not chirp 3 gear. Swap back to the POP and I was chirping 3rd again.
But SE-Rican, are you using a POP with the full CAi? If so do me a favor, try using it with a regular K&N. (Like the one that comes with the kit). Then tell me if it pulls better. I ask because I am using a CAI again and without the POP in the fender the car feels stronger than the CAI with the POP in the fender or the POP on the MAF as a shortstack.
eliterit 09-29-2002, 02:53 AM okay, i just recently did a 2.5" mandrel bent cai with less bends than the aem and before the cai setup i had just a $25 filter on the maf, and i just want to say that i did notice a difference when i switched over to the cai, i dont know for sure yet since just after i installed the cai my alternator went out , so i havent redlined it yet or chirped the tires.
What i wanted to ask is that if the pr cai is a 3". I dont know much about the issue of diameter, but i would think that a smaller diameter would create a better suction and quicker flow? Please no one tell me that i dont know what i'm talking about or anything, i'm just saying that my vote is for the cai.
Limited Slip 09-29-2002, 03:23 AM never had it dyno'ed but personally ive had better track times with a USED POP--and it was a generic one at that--versus a new PR CAI.
i seem to have performed better against friends with the POP than I do now. weird.
*** the CAI does sound 20000 times better
eliterit 09-29-2002, 03:29 AM the sound difference from the two i had were, the cone filter sounded beautiful on WOT because all u could hear is massive sucking. But with the cai it makes my car sound mean  ,,, although i do miss that sucking noise with my cone filter.

S4 power VS lightened power!!!!
Its on!!
nx2000racer 09-29-2002, 12:21 PM well all i gotta say is that i love my aem cai.. i think the sound alone is worth 213 bucks... (not to mention the sweet power gain) :D
