The only way to tell is to take it appart and make sure the crank is okay, and if it is you should be able to put new rod and main bearings in it.

Now what is involved in taking apart the motor to look at the crank??? I know the lower and upper oil pans need to come out! what else to you need to do to get to the bearings? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks again and have a good one!

I believe it would be the same process that you use to drill and tap for oil return, you take the lower oil pan off, the oil pan baffel, the uppper oil pan, the oil pickup tube, the engine crossmember, the secondary to the exhaust(or the downpipe if you have turbo). After this point I am not sure, I'll look at my FSM and see what she says.

It's not hard, just remove both of the pans and you're there. There are two 'hidden' bolts holding the upper pan to the block, over by the tranny. I'm pretty sure I posted a procedure on the Forum once, do a search.

I was looking for a write up on main bearing replacement also. I remember seeing it once before but se-r.net brought up nothing, off to the forum search engine.

Replacing the crank bearings was painful enough while the engine was on a stand. I can't imagine doing it with the motor still in the car.

Lower pan, tranny, upper pan, front cover/oil pump (and pickup), front seal, rear seal, rod caps, chain tensioner, chain guard, etc...

It would probably be easier just to remove the whole damn engine. YMMV

SENTRACER’s got it right. Once you’ve removed everything, oil pans, cross member etc. pull off the rod caps one at a time and replace the bearings. You’ll have to rotate the engine via the front main pulley in order to access all four rods, but it really isn’t that difficult.

No, no, no! You don't have to take half that stuff off, just the 2 pans, the oil pickup and the girdle (not even sure about the girdle, I forget). At that point the rods are staring you in the face.

You don't have to remove the girdle.

I know this thread is old, but I was on vacation.

You are talking about rod bearings, while I was replying from a question concerning crank/main bearings. I know this because I changed all of my bearings.

It is also alot easier to change the rod bearings with the girdle off.

Just helped a buddy change his rod bearings this Sat. We went in from below. Crossmember, secondary, lower, upper pans. Left the girdle and main bearings alone. The crank was fine so the bearing swap fixed his car. No more rod knock.
What is the shop going to check?

Well I got some answers.. I was fortunate enough to not have damaged the crank so now its just the issue of getting the right numbers for the main and rod bearings and fixing it.. I will let everyone know how it goes.. I still keeping wishing for the best.. You never know till its done:D
