what do you think is a cooler overall car to own, an NX2000 or an original VW beetle? Obviously the NX has much more potential in every respect, but everyone loves an old beetle. The reason I ask is that i gave up on a half restored beetle when i bought my NX and now my little brother has it almost completely restored and now im jealous!!

More potential, no I think not there are several 8-9 sec old beetles here in cincy. The front wheels dont touch the ground on one of them untill well past the 1/8 mark.

I just kept my old beetle when I bought my SE-R;)

the Beetle has far less handling potential, but in the straight line they can be disgustingly fast for an aircooled angine(we are talking single digits). The NX is the perfect chassis for the SR20 IMO, and has the best handling potential of all the USDM SR20 cars, albeit the ugliest(with the B14 coming in a close second:D )

there is a NX2K running STS class in the local autoX's that routinely wins its class and jockeys for FTD with a guy driving a Porsche Boxter S(who runs in the class known simply as Expert, and writes the AutoX column for the National SCCA rag.)

when it comes to looks they both are the same...i mean...both have styling that the majority didn't like...and its a 'you like or u don't' kind of thing...

but i think handling wise the nx would be far better...and i own an nx too...

so NX all the way!! ;)

I have to vote for the NX on this one. If I was going to own something old that needed full restoration I'd get an old Mini Cooper. Contemplated doing that instead of buying a classic, then I found out a bunch of greedy old bastards are hanging on to rusted out old mini's and wanting several gradn for them.

I'm glad someone else said it first! I agree wholeheartedly, I totally dig the NX, power windows and locks, AD22's areodynamically friendly, rather rare. But man, I can't get over the looks of them! B14's look like Honda's, but there are some nice ones on the forum here that stand out. No flames please, just my opinion. So I'm left with the classic which I like the looks of the best anyways.

beetles are ugggggggg-lay. nx's are much nicer. By the way, who else thinks b14's look like honduhs? I don't. Just want to know what people think.

take it easy...its my opinion, and I am more than entitled to that, my boyfreind thinks my B14 is ugly, I think his CRX is ugly...we all have our own opinions....

I didn't say I wouldn't snatch an NX up in a millisecond if a nice clean one became available! they may be ugly in my eyes, but the handling capabilities of the car far outweigh its looks!!!!

By the way, who else thinks b14's look like honduhs?

the B14 looks nothing like a Honda, any Honda. B14s look like boring old sub-compact family sedans, they have stupid looking rear ends, but they have little in common with any Honda. anyone who thinks they do needs a new hobby:rolleyes:

i will have to agree with anna on most accounts (except that i think the B14 is the best looking, from the front bumper to the b-pillar, after they they get real ugly imo).


no, B14s look NOTHING like a honda.

they have a more bulbous front and a higher hoodline (the hondas have a double-wishbone suspension which allows a lower hoodline (no coil spring above the wheel).


NXs are ugly imo. especially those hideous headlights. they make me wanna vomit. would i use one for an auto-x car? you damn betcha i would :)

i won't turn down ANY fun-to-drive car (which is a problem i have--see sig) :D

Bah! Beetles are novelty cars. My wife had one when we were dating, and it was fun for a while, but I'm just not that into them any more. Gimme a car that handles.

About styling:
NX - Love/Hate; at some angles it's like a Mini-Z, at other it's froggy. Overall, I love it though. It's a little odd, but very distict and you gotta dig the T-tops. Most girls think they are cute, too.

Classic - It's the spokesman of the SR20 community. It is handsome in it's own way w/ it's subtle performance cues that are instantly recognizable to enthusiasts.

b14 - In the non-sr20 models, Blah. The wheels and profile are nice. B14's take well to body kits, and I love the SE-L tails (they look interestingly Japanese).

well a nx2000 is ugly.Till you drive one and that is when you fall in love with it .very fun car .1600 is still ugly with out the ground effects:p sorry i have 2 nx2000

well since i have ownd both, used to have a orange 72 supper bettle id say the NX is better :D dont choke on exhuast when you turn that heater on, deforst on the NX works, i can pic up chicks in the NX, the NX has torque, the NX can make it up a really steep hill with out your buddys geting out. your feet dont fall out the floor pan in the NX, i could go on for ever...

But the bettle is a classic, and dose oddly bring joy go figur ? but i love my NX much more than the bettle.

I'm driving a beetle for 11 years now, with a phat 1600 engine with dual carbs, discbrakes, Porsche dash, etc etc, and for the weekends i drive a VW microbus from '66.
My 100NX is just a daily driver to get to work, and to enjoy the sun in the summer.
You can't say the beetle is better then a Nissan (it's almost as fast as my Nissan ) but is has much more potential then a Nissan !
All the girls are standing on the street when i drive by in my Bus or beetle, and i never had that in my Nissan
But in the cold winters here in Holland you really need a car with a good heater and wipers so that's why i have the Nissan.
Also for long distance it's handy to have a car like that.
So if you ask me, i would say, take the Nissan as a daily driver, and next to it, drive a beetle for fun in the weekends !
So if you ask me, what do you think is a cooler overall car to own ?
I would say: THE BEETLE !!

actually.. i dont think he is the right person.. look at his sig.. he is obviously biased.

i dont think ANYONE on this forum (or on any air-cooled VW forums) are qualified to make the decision which is better.. as everyone on either forum is gonna be biased.

besides. there is no clear-cut answer to which is better.

still, my opinion:
as a road racer: NX
as a drag racer: Beetle
as a daily driver with creature comfort: NX
as a cheap-to-maintain daily driver: Beetle (remember, for the cost of REBUILDING an SR20, you could buy a couple BRAND NEW beetle engines)
as a fun weekend car: either, take your pick.

I say the NX!!!

Depends on what/how you want to get your automotive jollies. As a long term investment, the Beetle will probably always be better. The NX will always be a better driving car, unless you're going to go drag racing, but then investment thing kind of goes out the window.

As far as "cool" goes I'd say the Bug will have more overall appeal that way. I'd keep both - one for cruisin' and the other for late-night-back-road-blitzing.
