Has anybody replaced an Outter CV boot before? I've been told i have a cracked CV boot.

I haven't inspected it myself, so I don't know if there is still grease in there or if it is dry. Assuming there is still grease in there, and that my CV joint is not damaged. How hard is it to replace the cv boots myself while referring to a haynes manual?

Nissan wants $225 per boot for the job (OUCH). I priced the outter boot for $18. Just looking for your thoughts/opinions.

thanks

it would be cheaper for you to replace the whole axle. even if you replace the boot chances dirt got into the axle already. try sears auto. i had my axle replaced there with alignment for $195.

yep definitely better to get the whole axle replaced. labor charge is still the same. got mine replaced by my mechanic for around $150 i think...sears priced me $200.

Buy the remanned axle from Napa or Autozone for 80 bucks...they usually have lifetime warranties. Replace it yourself. For a first timer, it would probably take around an hour or two. i can do one now in about 20 minutes, taking my time with air tools.

Thanks for all the info. Sounds like replacing the axle is the way to go.

Please forgive me if this sounds dumb, but does a remanufactured axle include cv boots?

If that is the case, then it doesn't sound too hard. I've got a friend who doesn't mind helping me wrench. I just try not to ask him for too much help, i don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of his time. But if it's as 'simple' as swapping the axle in and out then i might not feel so bad, hehe.

I figured the dealership was WAY off on their quote of $225 per boot.

crazy4myb14 mentioned that he got an alignment after replacing his axle...did everybody else get one after replacing their axle?

thanks!

they reccomend you get the alignment...i didn't and i'm paying for it with worn out inner part of my front tires.

anytime you mess with suspension parts..alignment would be a must because it throws off the alignment settings.

oh btw....to keep your boots lasting for a long time... clean it up with soap and water like once a week. kinda like a preventive maintenance.

You guys saved me a buttload of money (the dealer wanted $450 to replace just the outter boots).

I got a friend to help me drop the axles tonight. Then I'm dropping them off at this CV Axles place, and they will removed the old boot, install a new boot and grease it for $20 per boot. They supply the boot too!

So for that price, I'm having them do the inner and outter boots on both sides. Cost me $80 for the boots and a case of beer for help with dropping and installing the axles!

SCORE!
