what is the largest tire that can be used on a 17in rim, that won't scrub when I turn?? I have 17x7 w/215/40s and they scrub slightly when turning

I have heard you can run a 215-45-17 but if you are already scrubbing, you won't be able to run that size. How low are you? I have Sportlines with 215-40-17 with no scrubbing at all. Maybe it's your offset? I have no Idea what my offset is.

Please define "scrub". When speaking of tires, "scrub" refers to slip angle. Do you mean that, or do you mean that the wheel/tire RUBS some part of the car in a turn?

it rubs the inner fender when I turn,

I have sportlines, I guess I have the wrong offset.

I've had no problems running 215/35-18 on 18 x 7.5" wheels w/ 45mm offset. I also have Eibach sportline springs (1.9" front 1.8" rear).

If you rub the inner well go to you local parking lot and drive around in circles, preferably a tight radius, until there's no more rubbing. Either the tire will wear down or the plastic will melt away. Either way it won't rub anymore.

Nice, and technical fix Mr. vrux. Elegant. you could just chalk the tire, drive around once or twice, and then cut the fender manually, where you see the chalk. This is so to avoid f*ing up an expensive 17" tire.
You could also try buying a proper set of drop springs :D

what offset would let me run 215mm without this problem?

Bennitto,
I just wanted to see if anyone would actually attempt this!

ITR_KILLR,
It will still depend upon the O.D. of the tire which is related to the series of tire and wheel size. By visiting Nitto or other tire websites they usually list all dimensions on different size tires. Make comparisons with what you know works such as 195/55-15 or 205/50-15. If you have friends running others sizes you can use those too. For me my 215/35-18 did not rub and worked great with a 45mm offset. Maybe consider these sizes to be your limits. But still wouldn't take someone else's word for it without investigating for yourself.

205/40/17 would be the size that would work best for our cars. 215/35/18 would be nice but that would juz slow ya down more. so stick with the 205/40/17s. i got em on my ride and i love the handling.

I think the idea is to avoid every bump in the road. 215-40 is good, 215-45 is even better if you can fit them. More side wall feels less bumps.

I feel on a modified car the stock tire size is no longer sufficient. If your car has only bolt-ons then there is no problem. When the manufacture determines the tire and wheel combonation it is based on the stock horsepower and torque of the vehicle. As you increase these the combonation may no longer be the best scenario. For instance, running a turbo SE-R on 195/55-15 would be a joke. I generally look for a sports car with similar power output as your own and try to relate tires sizes. My 215/35-18 never slowed me down because I don't race on the street. And just for information a 215/45-17 has a larger O.D. then a 215/35-18 and 215/40-17 is wider than both.

i believe 205/40 won't change the rolling diameter as opposed to 215/40 or 215/45 correct me if i'm wrong:)

A stock 195/55-15 tire is aproximately 23.31" O.D. depends on the brand too. A 205/40-17 is 23.5" O.D. using both Nitto (555) and Yokohama (Parada). The 205/40-17 is the closest you'll find to stock. The difference is almost negligable. The 215/45-17 (Nitto) is 24.61" O.D. and the 215/40-17 Nitto (450) is 23.74" O.D. with the (Parada) being 23.9" O.D.
