NissanRaceShop.com's Project Shart

NissanRaceShop.com has a new car being added to our stable! This 93 Sentra SE-R was aquired last weekend to fullfill the role of our newest project car. Follow us as we build this car from ground up and develop this "Budget Racer" into a fierce competitor! We want to show that even those on a budget can build a car that is just as fun and competitive.

We found this little gem out in the middle of the desert in a little town called Sandy Valley, NV. Mobile Homes, running water, dirt roads, no gas station, and random bodies buried out in the middle of nowhere just about sums up this town. (ok, i made the last part up...but it "could" be true!)

Paperwork showing the owner as "the original owner" was a good first sign. Huge stack of papers including all service receipts, mod receipts, and various copies of magazine articles about the SE-R were the second sign that this little car was loved. This guy did his homework and allowed us to purchase this "tastefully modded" vehicle. Mods included were Header, exhaust, intake, wheels, sway bars, strut tower bars, springs, and grounding kit. Most of these items will be replaced, but a few will be kept in this build.

Plans for this project you ask? The ultimate goal is to turn this into a Track Terrorizing wheel to wheel racer in the upcoming MotoIQ Pacific Tuner Championship. As we build the car, it will make regular appearances at Redline Time Attack Events and Track Days with Speedventures. Scott VanderHeide, Motorsports Director at Fontana Nissan/NissanRaceShop.com will be piloting this vehicle. With several years experience as a competitive Time Attack driver, he is excited about taking this car to a competitive level.

Stay tuned as we build this vehicle...see what works, see what doesn't. We expect to learn from this project...and hope you do as well.

yes...we are aware it has an automatic transmission. We will be doing a swap soon!

Stay tuned for updates as we build this car!

Redline Time Attack is this weekend at Auto Club Speedway. So why not take the SE-R out for its maiden voyage??? No expectations will be set as it will be more of a fun run for me and a way to get some seat time to get comfortable behind the wheel! I've been racing a high horsepower AWD STi for the last 4 years, so there will be a slight learning curve going to a low hp front wheel drive car.

Chris Heimburg, Master Technician here at Fontana Nissan, is prepping the car for this weekend's event. Oil change, Coolant flush, new water pump, hoses, belts, and crank seal.

Next up, gotta pick out some fresh rubber for the car...as the front tires on now are showing some serious wear. Stay updated as we go into tire selection, install and align!

Looks really clean Scott. How many miles on the clock?

its got right around 122k on the odometer. pretty low for such an old car....motor is very clean and very apparent the car was taken car of!

I will be concentrating on chassis and suspension first with the motor emphasis on reliability. Please feel free to add you input with suggestions as we don't claim to know everything! Always happy to consider different points of views and such ;)

Man, what a good looking B13, and the previous owner had great taste in wheels! How high on your to-do list is a manual tranny swap?

LOL! Manual Tranny Swap is already in the planning process...just gathering a list of all the necessary parts needed to complete the swap! I've been searching and all I can seem to find is B15 tranny swaps!! I figured I can save money just doing the B13 swap because its not going to be a high horsepower car and it should hold up fine. If anyone has a complete list of what's needed, it would be greatly appreciated!!! and yes, i did search first ;)

5 speed tranny w/ bracket
tranny mount

clutch (w/bolts)
flywheel (w/bolts)
clutch cable
clutch pedal and hardware
speedo cable or sensor (depending on year and if different from auto)
shift linkage and stabilizer

may have to wire in the neutral switch, reverse switch, etc.
shifter, hardware, and shift knob
shifter surround

that's all i can think of at the moment

Over the weekend, we paid a visit to Auto Club Speedway for the Redline Time Attack Season Finale. Although we didn't expect much from the car as it sits...it didn't mean we didn't expect to have a little fun with it! ;)

Whoever said you can't drift a FWD?

I must say...Project SHART definately lived up to its name! It was slow, it was piggish, but hey...that little $hit surprised me! The automatic transmission got me to a top speed of 100mph on the straights and banking. Turning the Overdrive off resulted in a top speed of 110mph...not much, but it made a difference in 2 seconds off my laptimes!

Obviously in its current state, the car was not too competitive, but I drove the hell out of it anyways. It had fairly new brake pads from the previous owner with tons of pad left...after two sessions, they were nothing but crumbles left. We made a quick run out to Autozone mid afternoon to pick up a replacement set, but after my third session, killed the left drive shaft. :(

All in all, it was a good day...the media was all over us. Even got interviewed by Yukio...all eyes were on the SHART...they WILL be scared...err well, someday ;)

Stay tuned as we have already acquired a 5 speed transmission from the junkyard, and ordered a new clutch/flywheel, and a full set of bushings to replace everything under the car!

Be sure to check out our blog at NissanRaceShop.com for updates and reports on the rest of our team!

nice! btw, what are you guys going to do about the brakes? AD22's? Wilwoods?
Off of what car did you get the 5 speed from?

FontanaNissan
11-17-2010, 04:19 PM
Brakes have not been determined as of yet, right now I am looking into the Wilwoods...per Mike Kojima, that is his recommendation. Mike Kojima has been my mentor with this project and been a big help already preparing me for this build. I take his recommendations with great respect.

Yeah, Mike Kojima knows his stuff and has done a great deal for this community. So which tranny did you guys pick up?

FontanaNissan
11-17-2010, 05:00 PM
Yes he does ;)

We picked up a 5 speed from a NX2000. ACT Clutch and AAsco 9lb flywheel are on their way! ;)

good find. i seen a couple B13's and NX's with trannies still in them last week at a couple of the local yards. I found an NX tranny for my P10 a couple weeks ago as well and so far it's holding up. Do you guys plan on rebuilding it....mainly the 5th gear?

FontanaNissan
11-17-2010, 08:12 PM
No plans to rebuild it as of yet...its still sitting on the floor in our shop. Everything seems to look good on it so far, will probably do the install some time next week! I'll keep y'all updated when we do!

FontanaNissan

Aasco 9lb Flywheel is here, Energy Suspension Bushings here...still waiting on the ACT Clutch to arrive so we can do the tranny swap.

Since I broke the cv axle at the last track day, and I was planning to swap the tranny anyways, i bought new cv axles for the manual transmission. Since the swap hasn't started yet and i need the transportation, I broke the bank and bought a new axle for the auto tranny...we're rolling again! got tired of seeing it sitting on the driveway! ;)

Will let you know what happens next.....
