Hey, is there a way to digitally see your timing, instead of manually adjusting it by the timing pin and the marks? I ask this because my timing marks are kinda wierd They are not like other SR20 timing marks, and not like any of the diagrams i see. When i set my timing to what is supposed to be 15 degrees i feel it bog really bad above 3500, kind of like the timing is retarded. So I have been riding around with the timing set at/around 21+* for the past 6months! But im willing to bet that it is not actually at 21* SO i would like to kow if there is a way you can digitally see/alter your timing setings.

I think you can check it with a consult or a techtom.

No you can't Mike. A techtom and consult will show you timing BUT they expect base timing to be set at 15 degrees. If you have your timing at 21 degrees the techtom and consult will still show 15 degrees at idle which is not what it is physically.
The only way to set it is via the timing marks and pointer.
Dennis there is another way if you are unsure of the 15 degree mark on your pulley. I have a Snap-On Digital timing light that does dial-back. What this allows me to do is this: I can set the timing light at 15 degrees timing and point down at the 0 degree mark on the pulley and when the pointer lines up with 0 exactly the car is set for 15 degrees. It is kinda hard to explain but what I do is set it for what I want the normal way and then double check myself digitally in dial-back mode to make sure I am dead on.
For example: There is no specific notch in the pulley for say 19 degrees. I can dial-back the light for 19 point it at zero and boom its at 19 after adjusting the distrib.

So you always dial-in what yuou want your timing to be set at. That aim it for the 0* mark. and that will adjust your timing. amd i on the right track? Where did you find that digital light?

No.
As I stated above, you can ONLY set it with the timing marks and pointer.
I still have to rotate the distributor and look at the marks. But instead of 15 or 17 or whatever I look at 0 and tell the timing light to digitally show me what it is.
For example. You take a traditional timing light and set it EXACTLY for 5 degrees (which our pulley's have a mark for.) Then I can hook up my timing light and tell it (set it) that my timing is supposed to be 5 degrees. So then I point down at the zero notch and see if the pointer is lined up with zero. Zero = 5 degrees on the timing light when I set it. When I turn off that feature I point back down and it lights up the 5 degree notch.
Bottom line: You must set it with the notch and pointer.

Setting the timing is the biggest B-I-T-C-H.
It took me 3 days of working at it to finally get it to "timing mode".
I cant remember who I spoke with.
It was either james vick or somebody:confused: that had me adjust some plastic screw by the PCV valve ( the screw is on the intake )and then finally I got the rpms right, where I revved it over 3,000 3 times and the engine just meditates in timing mode.
IT TAKES ALOT OF PRACTICE IF YOU ASK ME.
I hope I never have to do it again.

classics are notorious for being a royal pain in the ass to get in timeing mode. b14's its like dead easy in your sleep type stuff. you dont have to follow all the steps to do it its so easy. classics you have to be dead on with your rpms then follow everything to the T

The thing is, your supposed to have the following timing marks:
-5 , 0, 5, 10, 15, 20
I have, 7 Marks not 6. so does my timing start at -10, or does it end at 25?? and my timing was set a little past the last mark! it has been that *** for a while. How do you KNOW* When you car is in timing mode. I just let her warm up, then unplug the TPS and idle goes up..then i adjust the timing, assuming its in timing mode.

You are doing it wrong. Your idle should drop. Read this and perform it word for word: Setting Timing Article (http://www.se-r.net/engine/about_timing.html#How is it done?)
Dennis as far as your marks are concerned read the 'Editorial Note' section of the same article. It should answer all your questions.
Good Luck

I had no problems at all when I set my timing. Got it in timing mode on the first try. I have mine set at 15 since I have the JWT ecu and nitrous. Don't want it to detonate.
