: Reliability of chain block method

Hello all,
Last week my cam shafts cam in the mail.. woo hoo :biggthump
Anyways. Ive been doing so much research so, like many people, I dont f it up.

Today are started seeing some posts around the net and here about mixed emotions towards using the chain block as described in JWT to change the cams out. The car manual I have says to use one. JWT says to. Yet other on the net say just to take the tensioner out.
I am mechanically inclined, but really would rather not mess with the chain tensioner.
Can anyone shed some light on what is better. And if the chain block is unreliable, why? what could possibly go wrong?
As you can see for doing this the first time Im a little nervous!
Thanks in advance.

I've done 5 sets of cams and never had a problem using the 'remove the tensioner and zip-tie and bungee the chain' method. Its easy and it works great.

Alright, so are you suggesting I take off the chain tensioner rather than use a chain block? Is the chain tensioner really that easy? Reading all the directions for it got me all sorts of confused. Like I said in original, Id rather not mess with it unless Im told otherwise that the chain block method isn't reliable know that Im sayin?

Yes its very easy. Zip tie the chain to both sprockets first. Remove the oil filter and pug a rag over the pickup. Next remove the lower nut and washer and then loosely reinstall the nut. Then remove the upper nut and washer and gently pry the tensioner so it pops partially out. Now carefully remove the lower nut again and make sure the nut doesn't go shooting off.

Ok, so, in your original post you said ziptie AND "bungee" so Im wondering what you do with the bungee? It sounds like the chain tension method can be easy, but im still up in the air on weather i should just use the block or not. Again does anyone know which is better, anyone have negative exp. with using the chain block as in JWT or positive? Let me know if you have good info on this, im still deciding :/

You bungee the sprockets to the hood to keep tension on the chain once you unbolt them from the cams.

I've always remove the tensioner when swapping cams. I also mark the chain and sprockets with white-out just incase something moves. I use the bungee cord on the bit of chain to hold the tenison on the chain. Make sure you turn the crank BY HAND when done to release the hook on the tenisoner and not with the starter.

whenever i swapped heads i marked my cams/cam gears.chain, removed the tensioner completely, and used wire to keep the chain from dropping into the block. and also, even if it DOES drop, you can always retrieve it.
