: My tach is bouncing like a madman!

I've got a 93 Nissan NX 2000 and am brand new to these forums. My motivation to register and post a msg is due to a problem I'm having with my tachometer.

Currently, it doesn't work. Some of the time it either shows: proper RPM reading, no reading at all, or it bounces around erratically.

The dealer wants to charge me something insane like $80 an hour to "try" to diagnose it. i'm turning to this forum so maybe there is some insight on why this is happening.

I have recently replaced the starter and the battery if that gives anyone any insight here.

Help! :(

I *just* tackled this problem, no more than 3 weeks ago. You need a new tachometer. Just go find a junkyard that has a 93 NX2000 or 93/94 SE-R instrument cluster. Take out your old one (4 screws or so and about 4 or 5 electrical connectors), swap the tachs, and put your cluster back in. No more than 10 minutes.

On my '91, I found a '92 cluster for $40 bucks. Works perfectly now!

I had a tacho misbehaving as described on a Sunny a few years ago. It was just a solder joint on the tacho's pcb that needed resoldering but it was (not) fun getting the dasboard out to do it.

Anyone have any clue what a pcb is?

I'm having the tach bounce problem. I have the cluster out, no visible problem.

Also does anyone know if a 1.6 tach will work? Or do I have to find an se-r one?

Well after searching, I found people that "re wet" the solder. I tried this now my tach doesn't even bounce. Guess I'll find one at a junk yard.

AGAIN: Does anyone know if I can just take the tach out of a ga16 car?

When I took it apart the needle did not come off by itself, it took the whole shaft with it, I think this might be why it doesn't work at all now.

when it starts bouncing it means its about to go...just get a new one from the boneyard or hit the classifieds up on the forum.....

1.6 for 1.6 and 2.0 for 2.0

Well it would have worked if the whole shaft didn't come out. It kinda works now, just never goes below 1500 and responds really slow.

Uhh... it's almost impossible to find an SE-R sentra 2.0 in the boneyards around here.

I bet the a 1.6 with a tach will work. When I had the cluster out everything looked universal, mine even had places for automatic transmission crap.
