: EGR vacuum control solenoid.....

I have a 91 Sentra SE-R and I'm trying to get it pass SMOG in Cali. It's a Cali car. Well the check engine light came on a few days before the SMOG check. After check the ECU code I received Code 32, "EGR control valve does not operate."

I check vacuum hoses to make sure there were no cracks or broken lines. Replaced them all with Silicone Vacuum hoses. Still did not work. So I check to see if I was receiving vacuum to the EGR control valve. Yes I was, but no vacuum to EGR or to AIV valve. So I believe my EGR control valve has failed.

Since this is a dealer part (checked Kragen, Napa, Pep Boys, junkyard, none) Turner Nissan and other Nissan dealerships quoted me about $92 for the valve. I was wondering if anybody in this forum would like to donate or sell a working EGR control valve. So I would not need to purchase a new one. Looking forward to your responds.

Thanks.

Q in Sac.

Hey,

I am a little confused by your lingo. The FSM refers to the EGR Valve as the "EGR control valve" There is a small solenoid that is nearly impossible to get at that is called the "EGR control solenoid valve" These are different things and I am not sure which you are referring to.

I don't know how much experience you have, so if you already know all this, don't take offense.

(correct me if I am wrong) Code 32 will generally pop up when the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor indicates that the EGR is not opening.

So, If the EGR valve opens (put your hand under it) when you apply the throttle, it is probably an issue with the EGT sensor.

If you think the EGR valve is not working you can test it by disconnecting the hose to the AIV valve and creating a vacum (you can use your mouth). This should cause the EGR to move upward. you can feel it underneath. If it does not move, push on it to see if it moves at all.

It is more common for the emissions manifold or the solenoid to become clogged or even for the EGR valve diaphragm to break than for the solenoid to stop working. spray a bunch of carb cleaner into the the metal tubes that the vacum tubes go into and use a wire or pipe cleaner to remove any junk.

Remember you will need to reset the computer if it throws a code like this. It will not go away after you have fixed the problem.

Emissions related parts are difficult to get and can be expensive (as you found out), so it is important to know exactly what the problem is (or if there is just a clog) before you replace any parts.

I have the same problem code32

CODE 32 = EGR control valve (most likely the EGR solenoid)

CODE 35 = EGT sensor
