Yesterday, my friend pulled the hood cable on his car to open the hood. Pop....dang! The cable broke!

How do you go about opening a hood like that?

What if that happens to our SE-Rs or NXes?

Anybody know of a way to open the hood without the cable?

Is there a way to keep that from happening?

Jack the car up, reach up in there and unhitch the latch.

Pull the grille off. It will be there in full view probably.

Now....I don't think it's even possible to open the grille without the bonnet off....I believe all the screws holding the grille is up top under the hood.

As for crawling underneath the car and popping it from there, we can probably push the security latch to open the hood....but isn't there another spring that holds the hood down too. Don't we have to release that spring before the hood opens (where the security latch will need to be released to open the hood all the way up).

Come on people....there has to be a way to open the hood if the wire snapped off for the hood.....

And while we're talking about it...what about the trunk and the gas cap? How do we open them if the wires snapped?

You should be able to reach the mechanism through the grill with a long screwdriver or such and trip the lever, that's likely your best bet. (I fabbed up a thick metal bracket that covers the mechanism on my truck hood release to prevent someone else from doing this very thing, as an anti-theft feature). In a worst case scenario, you could remove the front bumper and easily reach the mechanism that way and not have to break the grill to get to it (assuming that tripping the mechanism through the grill with a long screwdriver didn't work). You can't reach it from the underside, at least not on the front, because the space between the radiator and the bumper is not large enough for even someone with boney girl arms like me to reach through. Even if you could reach from the engine bay side, the mechanism is on the other side and you can't trip it from there. As for the trunk, you can always use your key. But let's say you shaved your trunk lock or it doesn't work and the cable is snapped, you'd take your back seat out and get into the trunk that way and trip the lever with a screwdriver from inside the trunk. Gas door, if the cable snapped at the gas door, you can probably get to that lever fairly easily from inside the wheel well and grab hold of what's left of the cable, or trip the mecahnism with something. Hope some of this helps.

Okay, Rob's story time! Several years ago a friend of mine locked his keys in his trunk while at my house. So to save him the cost of having a locksmith come to open it we decided to try ourselves, despite that it was cold as hell and snowy out. Couldn't figure out how to slim jim it at the time, so I did things the hard way. I jacked up driver's side front and took the wheel off. I then unbolted the driver's door hinges from the body inside the wheel well. This gave me enough room to pull the door away and slip a hanger down into the car and catch the trunk release lever. :) It was really a fun challenege.

Yes.....I do worry about too many things. It's in my nature.

You see....when you're poor like me....you have but little choices.

Hehehehehehe....

Anyway, toolapcfan....thanks for the info. I guess I should go ahead and inform my friend about the fix for his hood.

Hehehehehehehehe.....

Thanks a lot guys.
