Unfortunately I was too busy working on the car to remember to take pics of the rest of the axle we pulled out of the tranny. It looked like the LSD splines were rotating AGAINST the diff splines as the splined part of the axle we pulled out had it's splines TWISTED quite a bit. He had an open CV boot on that side so my guess is that with his agressive driving before he hit the drag strip as well as the dry hop he peformed before launching got that VLSD so hot (mostly due to extra friction due to no grease in the boot) that it basically locked and caused the axle to snap. That's my only theory.

Wow, that was a clean break. When I broke my axle, it broke at the CV joint itself and all of the little bearings got grinded up so that they weren't round anymore :p

Yeah that was no fun. I only wish I coulda kept that axle as a trophy. Kinda twisted huh?

Thanks to Ben D. and Ben M. she's all better again:D I've also noticed it rols smoother and turns easier now, too, since I actually have grease in me boots.

When I broke mine it did the same exact thing!!! That was a clean break.

Rob- do you know why you broke yours exactly? Was it the driver's side? Was the CV boot broke/off with no grease? Did you have to take apart the tranny to remove it?

Well Ben I broke it launching at the track on nitrous. We did not have to take the tranny apart. Yes the boot was torn and all the grease was gone. I think the boot was already torn so it may have been running dry. I guess the launch did not help much.

AHA! So it looks like there is a common thread here. Check your CV boots before you go racing! :)

i just got my car the other day and the drivers side boot is leaking grease. What can i do to prevent anything to it :(

Or is it already gone?

How much are they to replace?

Guys said it doesnt click yet but said it needs to be fixed soon :(

Any ideas?

Yeah, it needs to be replaced as soon as you can. The Boot holds the grease in around the CV joint. If the boot is torn, the grease will leak out as it heats up and you'll get dirt and grime into the joint. Some mechanics are willing to just replace the boot if the axle isn't clicking... other's will just recommend replacing the whole axle because they don't want a chance of a comeback. Basically though, if the grease is still packed in good and it doesn't appear that there is dirt or foreign matter in the joint (and it's not clicking) then you should be able to get away with just putting a new boot on.

My axle didn't break at the track. However, they did break on track like conditions!

The boot hadn't torn or leaked any grease out. I was turning left at a light, and decided to go WOT. As I floored it in 1st, my wheels started spinning, and i felt the left side of the car bouncing (due to bumpy pavement), then everything got real smooth as I bounced off of the rev limiter. Axle no more:(
