: finally got to test out cams
REDSENTRASE-L 10-15-2002, 10:27 PM ok. i just installed my cams. i thought it ran good until today. i guess i got the cams broken in after driving them 300+ miles around town at various rpms below 3500. i noticed that you can't feel the power until 6000rpm. there is less power from idle to 6k rpm! it just feels like it doesn't want to go until 6k.
i got to drive my friends sr20, and it's much faster! his is just about stock. i just got used to the way my was until i drove my friends stock sr20. wtf!
i had problems on a skipped tooth, but i fixed it.
here's what i did.
-changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor
-changed oil
-idles very smooth
-reset timing to 15, 18, 13, back to 15
-reset ECU
-cams are in correct position in relation to crank.
-made sure there are 20 rollors between cam gears
-set intake cam back 1 tooth and then forward 1 tooth- then it wouldn't start.
-didn't get a chance to mess with the exaust cam yet.
-replaced starter
-fixed broken timing chain tensioner stud that was leaking a shitload of oil
here's what i'm gonna try to do tommorow because i'm desperate:
-adjust the exhaust cam back 1 tooth and forward 1 tooth even though it is at 12 o'clock when the crank is at TDC
-re-install 92 cams
-see if i may have spun the distributor shaft upon installation
-might return the cams to JWT if the 92 cams work better
-get rid of my se-l
-drink some beer
eric96ser 10-15-2002, 10:35 PM Mike Kojima said he got good power from S4s and cam gears. I'm not sure exactly what he did, but that's an option. See what Andreas says. Also, what are your mods? Stock B14 exhaust can kill the cams. My car felt much better, but not a huge increase. I think its either all in my head, because my wife thinks my car is way faster than her '97, and I had a '93 intake cam in before. Make sure the intake cam is at 10:00 and exhaust cam is at 12:00. Don't move the cams if they are in those postitions. Sometimes it takes the ECU a few weeks to adjust to the cams. Have patience. :) Oh yeah, the distributor can only go on one way, so that's not a problem.
REDSENTRASE-L 10-15-2002, 10:45 PM here's my mods
-hotshot cai with JWT POP
-stillen 4-1
-2 1/4 b-pipe
-magnaflow straight through perforated core muffler
-UR pullies
-1996 g20 ecu
about the distributor, if you spin it 180 degrees, wouldn't it still fit inside the exhaust cam?
it feels exactly like driving a civic si packed with fat chicks. seriously!
eric96ser 10-15-2002, 10:49 PM Strange. No the distributor will not fit 180deg off.
spdracerUT 10-15-2002, 11:00 PM Man, I don't know what to tell ya. I know with my s3's, I didn't lose any power down low and it ripped like made over 5k. The only thing I can think of is that the cam timing is off.
I guess make sure everything is in the correct position: the motor is at TDC, distributor is in the correct position, and turn the motor over so that you can see the yellow marks on the chain. The yellow marks will verify for sure that the cam gears are in the correct position or not. Good luck!

civicdragon 10-15-2002, 11:38 PM werent you having problems with your gas milage too? Your problems might be deepier than the cams
muleman 10-15-2002, 11:59 PM ok mabee i missed it but what cams do you have?
REDSENTRASE-L 10-16-2002, 12:02 AM so what cylinder should the distrubutor be on at TDC? also, where is the yellow mark suppose to be at in relation to the cam gears?
civicdragon 10-16-2002, 12:10 AM I believe the firing order is 1342, I dont have my fsm in front of me... but it should be the first cylinder closest to the distributor
spdracerUT 10-16-2002, 01:06 AM there are two yellow links on the chain, they mark for you the 20 or whatever links that should be between the marks on the cam gears.
SR20steve 10-16-2002, 01:13 AM it feels exactly like driving a civic si packed with fat chicks. seriously!
Jay-R you crack me up man. And I dont care what they say about you, I like ya man.:D
REDSENTRASE-L 10-16-2002, 01:30 AM that was the best explanation i can think of! good one huh!:D
civicdragon 10-16-2002, 01:35 AM OK, the fsm I have is for B15's so I dont know if it is different... But the yellow mark should be towards the crank shaft sprocket.. you should have two blue marks that align with the camshaft sprockets... they could have changed the colors during that year so I might be mistaken on the colors.. but if you have two paint markings of the same color then those are the camshaft markers..

hmmmm. i can only find one yellow marker that was located on the 3 o'clock position on the exhaust cam. thats where it was when i first took off the valve cover. i'll search for the blue marks. my oil might be covering the blue marks.
do you have anymore pages that you can share out of that FSM?
eric96ser 10-16-2002, 08:06 AM The marks on the chain are for when you put the motor together. You will never know if the yellow mark is lined up below, with the front cover on. To make sure your car is at TDC:
Turn the crank clockwise until the pointer on the front cover is parallel with the TDC mark. Stock pullies have a yellow dash. I'm not sure about UR pullies
Look at the cams. The key in the intake cam should be at 10:00, and the exhaust should be at 12:00. If they are way off, don't worry. The TDC mark lines up twice. Once for #1 and again for #4. Take the distributor cap off, and see if the rotor pointing toward the #1 post on the cap. If not, keep turning until you see the TDC mark again.
If the intake and exhaust cams are at 10:00 and 12:00(or close to it), count the rollers between the dots on the gears. there should be exactly 20.

I think this is whats killin you. Isnt there a member out there who had the 4-1 and put a HS on and got like 10 more HP?
NismoNx2000 10-16-2002, 09:33 AM It was subculture, he had the stillen on there, then he dynoed with the new hotshot gen 5, and made 11 hp on top of the stillen. So either the hotshot makes mad power, or the stillen is useless.

the stillen IS useless. the primaries are way too small. smaller that the stock manifolds' primaries.
i drove my car again. power comes on at 5500 now for some reason.
civicdragon 10-16-2002, 03:18 PM delayed effect of all the hard work =) but check your PM, my FTp is open
Slartibartfast 10-16-2002, 03:22 PM TDC refers to cylinder #1 which is at the front of the motor, farthest from the distributor.
