One reasion people polish their crank is because of spum bearing/thrown rods causing scoring of the crank. This from what i hear is a very bad thing and in somcases the crank can be polished to fix the problem. It cheap to buy a new engine than to replace a crank, at least for our SR's. Hope that helps, and someone feel free to tell me wrong :)
