My starter is starting to sound horrable.. Evertime i start it.. It squeels so loud. This is on my 98 Sentra SE. I remember reading somewheres that some B14s came with HITACHI Starters and some came with MITSUBISHI Starters and one was the one that went bad and one wasnt.. I was just wondering which didnt go bad since i cant really see mine until i take it out and i dont feel like taking it out until i get my new one. Im just gonna goto www.car-part.com and get a used one or buy a used one off of a forum member but i had no replys in the classifieds for wanting to buy one. If anyone can let me know so i can end this terrible noise I would greatly apreciate it.

I've heard that pulling the starter out, and pulling the gear hosing off and greasing it up will solve the squeal. For how long I don't know.

My dad's has an Auto (SR18DE) and it makes same damn noise. He is in Japan so it's not only the U.S. thing.
I would get the Mitsubishi starter too "if they fit". They are suppose to be cheaper than Hitachi (new) from the dealer too.

Are you sure your belts aren't too loose? They can squeal at start-up.

Good point. Starter squeal sound is different than belt squeal. But if you never heard the sound, maybe it is hard to notice the difference. Starter squeal sound is lower pitch sound than belt noise.

This is no belt squeel this is a loud horrable mechanical sound.. It sounds nothing like a belt at all..

I did this to mine well over 100,000 miles ago and it's still working fine- cheap fix, really.

Really.. Hmm. What kinda of grease was used? Just regular grease you get in a tube? or is it like a lithium grease?... Does anyone have any pics on where it goes and what part you take off? I guess its def worth a try.

yeah I've got the good ol starter sqeal too. I figure I'm going to buy another soon, but if greasing it works I might just go that route.

I used some wheel bearing gease. Worked like a charm.

Open the housing up, gease the main gear and the 3 outer gears well. When I done mine I went light on the grease and after 3 monthes it is coming back. I am almost 100% sure that if I had used a liberal amount I wouldn't be hearing the sqeal now.

I found a place somewhat close to me who has 2 Infinity Mitsubishi starters. They only want $30 so I'm probably going to pick one up. A spare doesn't hurt:D

I might need that starter too. $30 is not bad if it's in good condition. Could you get it for me too? :D

I'll see how many they have, and what kind of shape they're in. I don't mind doing a friend a favor.

It definitely matters. The starter engages the teeth on the flywheel to get th emotor turning. The flywheel on an automatic is different than the one on a 5speed. Make sure you get a starter for a manual sr20.
