When should I start looking at getting my timing belt replaced? Are there some signs that I should be aware of that my belt is about to snap? I have 105k on my car right now....

Do you have a SE-R? If answer is yes, then never.

SR20's have a timing CHAIN.

If your timing belt breaks, you have some serious problems. The biggest thing is that the SR20 doesn't have a timing belt, it has a chain. You don't have to replace it like Honda. That's why are motors are superior to theirs. http://laf.cioe.com/~benbobbo/NonCGI/biggrin.gif

Hey, I do think that the GA16DE's have belts though. I could be mistaken but since it's really an economy car I would assume it's a belt.

It has 2 chains.

OK, I stand corrected...timing CHAIN...So that means that it doesn't need to be replaced?

Storm8800 the GA16DE also has a timining chain.

The timing chain should last as long as your engine. I've been around SE-Rs for over five years, and I've never heard of a timing chain breaking.

So, when should I have the tesioner upgraded?

No Tom, my mechanic hasn't said anything, except that if I do have to get the chain done, it's going to be pricey(he gave me that little tidbit when he was doing the inspection on the car before I bought it). I had assumed it was a belt, because I figured every Jap car had a belt.....

Hey, wait a minute, my GSX has a timing belt!

Your chain can become stretched to the point of needing replacement. Also the tensioner can become weak. IMO, if the chain is stretched, just buy a new motor from Soko and swap it in. As big of a bitch as it is to swap the chain with the motor in the car, and the other wear on the engine if it is stretched (not that a stretched chain caused it, just if your engine has that many miles it's probably pretty tired, swap it out and rebuild it with high compression, cams, etc), it would take about the same amount of time and money to do a motor swap if you're going to buy all the stuff you should replace on the motor with the chain (guides, tensioner, etc). A slightly used motor from Soko is $395 right now.

Keep in mind though that there are guys with cars over 200K that run 14s.

Also, I doubt your chain is stretched though, they're pretty tough. The tensioner has been upgraded, though. I prolly need one on my SE-R, as it has a wicked chain slap on start up (no oil pressure leaves the tensioner too loose I guess and the chain makes all kinds of racket for 2 seconds on startup). The tensioner isn't too expensive to replace.

Did someone tell you your belt [chain] needs to be replaced? If it was your mechanic, stop seeing him.
