I have a 95 200 sx SER with 121k on it and I really would like to turbo it. I was looking to find out what you all had to say about putting a turbo on that engine with that many miles. Should I get a rebuild? New? Used Jspec? Any help would be great. Thanks a bunch.

i would start with a compression check

I would think it shouldn't be that bad as long as the car is running good. Also, I would just go with a USDM engine if you get a new one...they are 9.5:1, as opposed to 10:1 from the JDM...lower compression=better boosting. Someone will comment who is more knowlegeable than more though.

if your lookin to run a t25 or t28 setup, the stock motor should work fine as long as its in good condition. Greg Perry has more miles than you, and his car runs great w/ a T28. A DET would be the best, but if $$$ is a big issue, (when isnt it, right) a USDM will work fine

if your running a t28 setup i think a 9.5:1 motor is the better choice... Your not gonna run too much hp with a t28 that requires a rebuild... the usdm motor with yeild more hp at the same boost level than a det

i've almost got that many miles on my '96 and buy the time i get to put on my turbo set up, i'll be around those miles. as long as the motor is in good shape, it should be fine....

Here is somthing I should add if it would help. Im looking to do around 280 - 350 hp I know its a wide range but some where in there.

if you want 350whp, your going to have to use a t3/t04, HKS GT, or INCON. no T28 will support that kind of HP.

Not all JDM engines are 10:1, it's actually more difficult to find a 10:1....most are 9.5:1, but people believe that just because its JDM, it HAS to be a 10:1.

CivicDragon: Depending on what he has done to the car he might get more HP than we think. I agree with not doing a rebuild, your almost better off getting another motor if anything happens to this one!

121k on a car is nothing at all. There is some guy around where I live with 265k and the car gets beaten on everyday(original motor). If you want 350whp out of an SE-R and havent been in a turbo one yet(I am not saying you havent), try getting in one that has 200whp. Then tell yourself how much you want. Good luck and have a good one!

What are optimal Compression Ratios that would be considered? I tested mine out to be between 167 and 170 in all four cylinders. Is htis OK for turbo?

Well I plan on the same setup but with the extras: cams and pulleys... If he doesnt raise the boost too high he should be ok... I'm still planning my setup and I'm kinda stuck on the fuel enrichment part... so if I need correcting go ahead. I actually want to know whats the max hp with my planned setup but ***** ever answers me.

Also I was saying that the higher comp ratio motor will give better hp numbers at lower boost...

I dont plan on gettign another motor or rebuilding anything.. if this one craps out on me I'm getting a VE or another car, probably a 240 or some awd car...

97SE-R C2: Those redings arent your compression ratio... those are good results though i got 170, 165, 165, 170 on mine.. Ineed a new valve cover gasket and it will be 170 on all 4...

What makes you think a new valve cover gasket will have ANYTHING to do with your compression readings?

LOL,
we finally have someone who admits they dont know shit! This is a good thing, want to know why? You will be more open to learning, this will give you some benefit to everything with your car. Learning is good, being stubborn and only doing what is recommended and all of that shit gets you no where. Learning on your own with a few friends and beer is helpful also! Good luck with your projects and I hope we all learn something with these damn cars!!!!

Sarcasm hence the sarcastic face  ...
I had a compression test done on my car and found a bit of oil on the two inner spark plugs. The test results were as posted. leakdown test was excellent as well. Therefore I need to change my valve cover gasket. I'd like to see someone not lose compresson if there is a leak. Hopefully it's not my head gasket, but I doubt it because I'm not burning oil or coolant... My exhuast color is not out of normal.

Oh and the only reason I didn't do the test myself was becuase I was in brakes class at school ad we could only do related work.

Okay...I still dont get why you think changing the valve cover gasket or spark plug gasket(o-rings) would make the compression any better?

What do you mean those AREN'T my compression numbers? Plus your cylinder pressure has nothing to do with the valve cover. You could take it off and get the same numbers ;)
