Things to keep in mind ***, most sig pics are stored elswhere, while the sr20 server actually hosts the avatars (right?). The animated ones are somewhat large file sizes too.
This one for instance, while only 150x200pix is over 125K.

can it be done so that avatars are stored on our own servers?

Avatars were recently turned off because people were using inapropriate ones. This had come up before and people were warned. It came up around the same time that people were abusing the custom titles features as well. There was a debate among admins on what to turn off. At some point in the future .sig images will be limited as well, to prevent the stupid sized ones that people like to use. When your .sigs are constantly longer than your posts, that is a problem. Avatars may return someday, but it's a minor thing to miss. Would you rather not have images in your .sigs?

Avatars were stored off-site, so that wasn't the issue. Just a simple case of a few people ruining it for the rest.
