I have a 97 200 Sx Ser, when the engine is cold and I start it up sometimes it makes a wierd noise like the valves needs adjusting or something its really wierd just wanted to know if anybody has a problem like that.

What does it sound like? There is a common starter problem where the starter makes a wierd squeling sound just after you start it up, only last for a second or two. It wont hurt anything.

Start up chatter. common problem

i have the same damn problem. i thought about posting it but i just knew somebody would start harassing me about it. i almost decided to go out and buy a new starter.

when it's real cold and i go to start my car, the starter makes a sound that sounds like a belt squealing. i thought maybe dirt and oil had kinda frozen itself in there and caused the starter to stick in it's outmost position until finally being forced back into place by the flywheel.

If the problem is not with the starter does anyone know how to fix this problem?

OK first find out if it is
A. startup chatter which is annoying but doesn't hurt your engine at all.
B. Starter sqeal

Starter sqeal can be fixed by opening you starter up and applying grease to the gears. I did this last week to mine without taking the starter off the car. The Hitachi units sqeal,the Mitsu's don't
