: What to buy??
To start I would like to say Hi to all, I have been reading on here for quite a while (mostly 5th gear popout stuff) and I like this forum.
I am going to tackle the 5th gear popout problem myself and was hoping for some help on what to buy before I pull the tranny?
The SE-R has about 130,000 miles on it so what do you guys think?
Clutch for sure. Which one? I would like to upgrade from stock but I don't plan on increasing the HP very much. I am going to sell the car some time down the road and would like to know it has a good clutch in it when I do as I'm sure I will sell it to someone like yourselves as I don't want it to go to just anyone (owned since new).
What about trans or motor mounts? A mechanic I took it to for the 5th gear problem said the engine mounts were shot causing the problem (now I know that wasn't right) so he changed them with stock mounts.
What about the tranny itself? What would be a safe bet for parts for it?
And would you attempt the fix yourself or take the parts and the tranny to a shop and pay them to do it?
Misc: What other things am I missing?? (cables, upgrades....etc...)
Was thinking of pulling the tranny this weekend, fixing it during the next week and reinstalling it next weekend. Good plan?
Thanks for all the help in advance.:)
jomama 11-26-2002, 09:48 AM first of all, you never mentioned that you actually have 5th gear popout, but i'll assume that you do. i believe www.courtesyparts.com has a 5th gear popout kit for rebuilding the transmission.
as for the clutch, it has been a hot topic of debate. a majority of the people here like the jwt pp with a stock se disc. then there are those who swear by the key value clutch from www.nissanaccessories.com - an inexpensive alternative especially if you plan on keeping the car naturally aspirated. with the clutch replacement, most people also replace th clutch cable - just about everyone goes with the oem one. hope this helps!
DTyne 11-26-2002, 10:36 AM If you're motor mounts were shot, then they probably did cause the fifth gear popout. At least they caused some wear and tear until you got new mounts, and by that time it was inevitably(sp?) going to popout. If you're going to be selling the car, you can just get the OEM clutch or go with the JWT PP and 2k disc. The JWT PP has a very nice feel to it. If you're thinking about taking the tranny apart and replacing some of the gears, you might want to think otherwise. The fifth gear popout kit at Courtesy is approx $300. For $100 more you can get a used 95 200sx tranny. This is advantageous because you get a newer tranny, a newer LSD, and it would be a lot easier to replace than the fifth gear popout kit. Just my .02, but I just replaced my tranny this past weekend and i found a tranny with 62,000 miles on it for $400, so give it some thought.

I just got off the phone with Courtesy Parts (very helpful).
Yes your advice helps a lot, thanks.
Looks like about $800 in parts with me doing the labor.
Not sure if I'm going to do the trans rebuild or take it to someone yet??
Thanks again
NismoSER 11-26-2002, 11:28 AM While you are in there....get some nice synthetic gear oil for your precious tranny. I use Redline Shockproof Lightweight. Others like Redline's MT-90.
I am one of those who swear by the nissanaccessories.com clutch kit. :) My personal recommendation to you though, is to get a 95-97 SE-R tranny. You won't have a problem unloading your old one to offset the cost, people like to pick those up all the time to swap out gear sets or use the LSD. Pick a clutch, a new clutch cable, and some gear oil and you are good to go.
So what do I ask for when I call the salvage yard?? Year? Model?
I didn't realize the "newer" trans didn't have the problem.
I called around and can get a newer trans for $400-$600, they seem to be out of 200sx's, is this right??
DTyne 11-27-2002, 11:16 AM they seem to be out of 200sx's, is this right??
Yes, this is correct. It'll take you a day to do the tranny swap. Although if you are going to replace you clutch it might be a two day job. Definately get some good tranny fluid though too, but make sure its GL-4.
Derek
Thanks for the tips. I have been asking for a 95-97 sentra and its been confusing them.
Here's where I'm at with this project: Ordered from Courtesy Nissan: JWT Pressure Plate, 2000 Disk, Rear Main seal, Clutch cable, Throwout bearing, Alignment tool, Pilot bearing, Diff/Axle?? seals, ES Torque mounts, ES trans shifter bushings.
They told me about having to block off the sensor hole which is about 1" in diameter. This is no problem as I weld aluminum.
Still looking for the trans, now that I know to ask for 95-97 200sx trans it might be a little easier, thanks.
What am I missing?? Besides the exhaust, Intake, Header, NOS...etc.......LOL
12.30se-r92 11-27-2002, 08:47 PM 1st of all whats up.I also stay in houston i had a se-r trans with no 5th gear popout but cracked the case so i threw it in my cousins backyard (still might be there)so if u just want the internals of a great tranny this one would work great no 5th gear popout!(i can check for you and u can have it if u want to come get it)now i got a used tranny but unfortunalty it has a 5th gear popout but only paid 3bills but i recomend calling maunel autosalvage here in htown theyll have it if not theyll get u a 200sx tranny for sure well goodluck but your better off just getting a oem clutch if yourgona sell the car with a 95tranny imo!
12.30se-r92........Thanks for the offer, I will let you know if I can't find a 95-97 trans, I have a line on a few but I will call Manuel Auto Salvage.
If you want I can probably weld that case up for you. E-Mail me if you wanna try it.
12.30se-r92 11-29-2002, 02:49 AM nah its cool my dads a welder i just didnt want to deal with it fucking up i mean it was a huge crack all the way across tranny splito!so i just got a used one.
I found a 1995 trans out of a G20, 2.0. Will this work?
What are all the applications of trans that will work for the 1994 Sentra SE-R 5spd?
Calum 11-29-2002, 12:48 PM I don't think so. I believe it will need different length axles if you use the G20 tranny. Also, unless it was from a G20t it dosn't have a limited slip, and all G20 trannys have different gearing. A 1991-1997 se-r tranny is what you want. Btw, since you can weld aluminum, you might look into welding the weak spot on the case of whatever tranny you get.
Is there a website that would have pics of the spot that needs reinforcment (welded)??
Also, as you can probably tell I'm new to all this, is there a site that I can learn more about what good upgrades are or do I have to just wade through the posts on here??

i duno about the sites for the welded but as far as mods go it all depends on what your looking for show/go ,both how much you got and how much u want to spend and what your looking to do for your car.might want to post on what your trying to get or do then get some responses:cool:
blairellis 11-30-2002, 08:27 PM there was a thread a while back with pics of what needed to be welded..im not sure if its still up but its worth taking a search for
Update: I have ordered the 5th gear parts from Courtesy. I am going to do the repair this weekend if the parts get here in time.
I'm still looking for a pic of the welded trans case as the searches that I have done don't have the pics in them anymore??
Thanks for all your help.
Got it fixed :)
It was fairly easy to do. The seals took a while as I had to find something the right size to drive them with. Pulling the axles was the hardest thing in my opinion. The trans rebuild was easy but complicated (lots of small parts). The new ES mount inserts were interesting to get pressed in. The ES insert that Courtesy sent me for the shift arm had two inserts but they were not the same size as you would think they should be?? Not sure what happened there, will talk to Courtesy and see if we can figure out what happened. I was thinking it might be a packaging mistake at ES. Wish I had new struts to install at the time but I didn't have time to research which ones would be best for my application.
Thanks for all the advice.
I have pics, trying to figure out what to do with them?
I thought I could post them here?
