My friend's new DET won't prime up... Took the oil hose from the turbo.. and cranked and cranked for about 30-45 seconds. Did this many times and no oil.. The oil light on the dash stays on as well. It's a fresh built RWD DET... Don't know what it could be.. It's got 4 qt's of 10w30 castrol in it, new pickup tube and pump too. Could it be air locked or some shit? I've never ran into this problem before. Any suggestions?

What oil pump did you use?
I heard that it's not uncommon for the oil pumps to go out in DET's.

What did the pump come off of?

Was the pump primed before it was installed, ie oil poured in it before assembly? Maybe try to put some oil in the filter then reinstalling, my help it prime.

It's brand new.. a buddy in Canada imports engines for me.. and he got it. It was brand new in the bag.

Ok, I was trying to make sure ut wasn't from a FWD DE. They are close, but won't work. Do you have the part number for it?

Make sure if you keep cranking it that way and your not getting oil psi to take the spark plugs out, there is not adiquit lubrication on the bearing surface's and you don't need the added compression pushing down on a crank with no oil, hopefully you used some sort of assembly lube on everything so to try and prevent any unessesary wear.
P.S. Try filling the oil filter with oil. If that don't work I hope you didn't forget to put the crank "dow" thingy back in that locks the oil pump drive chuck cylinder thingy in place and turn the oil pump sorry I don't have the correct names, but hopefully you know what i'm talking about.

I don't have the bag it came in anymore.. I'm 99% sure it was RWD though.. car actually ran with this pump in it for about 6 months.. We just took it apart to put pistons and rods in. It's been sitting up for a while, but we didn't even pull the timing chain cover off this time. Louis said something like I might have to put a shop vac on the oil feed line and suction it while I crank. Said that's what he had to do on his initially. I pulled the plugs out when I was cranking... I'm glad I used that 40.00 a bottle lucas assembly lube on all my surfaces when building the engine. :)

Under advise from Louis Anaya.. I took my shop vacuum, and taped the hose to the oil feed line coming from the sending unit. Turned the vacuum on.. and cranked the car over. After about 3 seconds, I hear the vacuum sucking in oil... and the light is no longer on. lol... It's all good, put it on the turbo and cranked it over again. Got good pressure now.. This is the weirdest thing I've ever had to do to get an oil pump to prime. ;) Thanks guys for all your help.
