I have a 91' classic with 100k and have not yet had the 5th gear pop-our problem. Is there anyway I can prevent it befor it happens? If so, how much $?

hey mpg9999,

here are a few tips i've heard to keep from having the 5th gear popout problem. first, don't lean on the shifter knob.

i hear a lot of the popouts are due to bent shift forks, not broken ones. bent ones only bend due to constant pressure, i.e. leaning on it.

the other thing that could be causing pressure on the forks are bad mounts. replace any mount that looks worn...or hell, if you have the funds, replace all of em. most notably, the front insulator i think.

other than that, i think that covers some stuff....good luck

Start saving, cause there is no stopping it now. I just spent $1400 on my trans last month.

I have read that the 5th gear synchro and that the shift fork gets bent are the reason why you get the 5th gear problem. Does anyone know which one is correct?

Well, it could be both, but most of the time its your 5th gear and the syncro. Check out pics of mine, you can see where the gear strips.

Yeah, gears - teeth - whatever you want to call them. I wish I could get a closer pic, but my digital camera sucks.
