OK here's the scoop. I need to know if I can drive my car (B14) in 4th gear on the highway without any problems occuring? Say 60-70 mph consistently? I ask because the shop that installed my gears goofed up 5th. Now it won't engage! Or do I need to get this fixed ASAP? Thanks peeps :( GTIRoids

What shop?Do you have reverse? There isn't a whining noise, is there?

Precision tune in Crofton. Yes I have every other gear just fine. No noises until I try to go into fifth. Then a grinding noise when I let off of the clutch :( I'm going to end up waiting and taking my car to a real ser shop in January. I'll have to drive like this for 4 weeks but so be it! GTIRoids

I drove my car from August 2001-July 2002 with no 5th gear! Most of the drive was a 50 mile round trip commute to school on the highway.

That truly sucks man. You should be fine w/ no 5th gear though.

Serban is doing the 4th gear runaround right now. He's been doing it for a while too. Making 7 hour trips like that. So it should be ok.

Cars in the past never had a 5th gear. In europe the cruise around at 100mph all the time. That would be about the same revs as 4th at 70mph or so. You should be fine.

As the others said it should be fine. Just as long as you can take the high rev sound for a long period of time ;)

i had to deal with that high rev sound for about 2 years when i was driving my dad's old 76 datsun b210 that only had four speeds. it is noisy on the highway though especially at 70+, but only real men dont mind the noise.

I actually just held my gear stick up into 5th when mine started popping out. Never had an engagement problem. You know, that's the problem with more complicated item like trannys... too many hacks and morons out there. Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for them to do it wrong?
