i have the starter squeal, but today, i went out to start her, and it sounded like the starter was firing but no engaging. alter 5 mins of bumping the key and flooring the gas petal, it finally started. any ideas if its the starter? or does it sound like a fuel problem?

i forgot to mention, i have a bb det. no it sounded like the starter was spinning, but no engaging. i didnt notice the engine moving. i put the gas petal on the floor, and cranked her and after about 10 secs, she started, but idled really ruff. thats why i think the warlboro pump might be going bad. i need a fuel pressure gauge.

Good question. The starter may be making noise but it may not even be turning the engine over. Like mpg9999 asked is the engine turning over?

id didnt see the rpm gauge moving, so i would say no. usually when it starts, i have alot of vibration, being i have the es mounts. i was smooth, and again, i dont think it was cranking. i am going to take the starter off and clean it.

Brian, could you *hear* the fuel pump working? Walbros are loud.
Also... it does you NO good to press the gas pedal on a fuel injected car with an electric pump. Just leave it be.

GP, the reason i put the petal down was because my pump makes some crazy noises. if i have less that a 1/2 tank, it makes some wierd sounds. i thought i would open the tb and mabe help start her. i worked, she started, and i drove her and restarted with out any problems, other that the squeal is louder. i am thinking the starter is going out.

Well if your engine is not being cranked, but you can hear the starter, then I would say its the starter. Not sure about the ruff idle. Maybe if the starter solenode wasnt engaging the gear, then, when your car finally started and the gear was engaged, it had a problem retracting and was putting resistance on your crankshaft causing a ruff idle. That last part is just a wild guess.

it may be your fuel filter that might be clogged or the fuel injectors. check those
