: What kinda exhaust you all running?
Saleen Cobra 01-03-2003, 02:32 AM I'm shopping for an exhaust system for my girlfriends car. She has a '96 200SX SE-R. She wants a nice deep sound. I'm still learning about imports myself, but Ive heard imports that had a very deep tone in the low RPMs but flattened out and sounded like a fart can in the high RPMs. The SR20 engine is a high revving engine and I want a nice tone in the high end as well as the deep low end.
Any recomendations? Entire systems are cool, or just a muffler, and I can have the piping from the manifold back custom made. Later on we might get some headers for it too. I just need to know what makes the car sound nicer, especially in the high end.
go with a good name brand, Greddy is what im running now... If you want to, i can post a wav of what my car sounds like taking off with it.

Do me a favor and go custom. find a muffler she likes (please no grapefruit shooter) stainless steel and get custom 2.25 mandrel bend cat back. you will be surprised how good it will sound. Get a straight through muffler Louvered and chambered mufflers work great on big v8's but suck on our 'noisy critckets'.
Welcome aboard

Chrissy 01-03-2003, 12:39 PM I have a Greedy also. :)
It is nice and deep and I don't think it has a single spot where it farts. Although my boyriend says differently.
qinsac 01-03-2003, 12:54 PM Go with a custom exhaust, 2.5" mandel bent. Magnaflow is good, its little loud. That what I have. I will check out Flowmaster, I was recommended their 60 series muffler. It suppose have a deep sound, haven't heard one on an import yet. Check out different mufflers and cat back system. Also check your budget!!!!

Words of wisdom :D
98sr20ve 01-03-2003, 02:40 PM I would do a 2.25 inch mandrel all magnaflow exhaust. www.bigexhaust.com has good prices. Get a oval can and be super stealthy but still have a great sound if you want that kind of thing. The 2.5 will be louder and not really be any better for most DE's
NX$paniard 01-03-2003, 04:58 PM AVOID FLOWMASTER AT ALL COST!!!!!
IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE PERFORMANCE, A CONSERVATIVE SOUND, AND NOT SPEND AN ASS LOAD OF MONEY (IE HKS GREDDY STILLEN)
JUST TAKE NOTICE OF DIFFERENT MODELS OF MUFFLERS AND USE YOUR JUDGEMENT
Rittmeister 01-03-2003, 05:29 PM HKS. Quiet but deep, resonant tone. Very durable, and very stealthy looking. Easily mistaken for stock except for the shiny tip.
My two cents.
OnyxEros 01-03-2003, 05:50 PM I have performance a conservative sound and didn't spend an ass load of money... even with my shiny tip mine looks stock. Now that i got the exhaust leak fixed (shut up Jacen!!! ;)) and my header on you can barely hear the exhaust at idle.

aztecred92 01-03-2003, 08:38 PM I've got Courtesy Nissan's (TopSpeed) S.S. catback on my car. It's got the deepest rumble I've heard and doesn't have the high pitched buzz of other units. It can be loud when you floor it, so if you're looking for a more civil sounding unit Greddy or HKS might be your best bet.
Pretty White 01-03-2003, 08:47 PM Dynomax Ultraflow for like $90.00 from Summit. A 3ARacing Tip for like $25-35. That will provide you a freeflowing muffler with a nice deep tone. Just listen to my NX pull away! The guys at the emmissions shop loved the way my car sounded.
94 se-r 01-03-2003, 08:53 PM I was told that 2.25 mendral bent is the best with any good straight throught design muffler... I heard u can place a better resonater on it like a thrush 24" or the biggest ur can find glasspack resonator it will cut out the drone at highway speeds...
you can get them at pepboys or local auto supply store can order them

Saleen Cobra 01-04-2003, 01:53 AM Well, Greddy and HKS doesnt really interest me. I cant justify spending $400-$600 for the exhaust. The Borla cat-back in my Mustang retails over $600, and its a dual exhaust, with two mufflers, and top quality stainless steel throughout.
Ive heard good things about Magnaflows, and having the cat-back custom made isnt too pricey.
My G/F was wondering about these mufflers on ebay:

Any info on these?

The tough part is deciding the look she wants. Personally i would say that dtm mufflers are only for german cars. Also, it's tough to know if ebay mufflers are full stainless steel or just the can. if it's just the can then you willl have the internals rusting out in no time.
Here is food for thought most of the greddy/hks systems the pipe can be had for less than $200 it's the muffler people are paying so much for.
Make sure she has a decent straight through design that she likes. No dtm please. then go from there.

WickedSR20 01-04-2003, 08:26 PM Also, keep an eye on the For sale part of this forum. Time to time, you can find a Greddy (which I run and love) or HKS catback for sale and it shouldn't hit the pocket too hard.
