so, i installed a stillen short shifter today, and after it took me like all fucking day to do it, i thought i'd see if i was just stupid or is it always a complete bitch to install these things?

It's not "easy" to do with one person really. Working around the cat and heatshield without disconnecting and moving the exhaust out of the way is a bitch, but it can be done. Took me 2-3 hours I think back in March or April to do mine.

Took me a couple hours by myself the first time, but went really quick the second and third times.

well, um..i guess i'm just stupid. i changed it and my shift stabilizer bushings out and it took me like eight hours to do it...i was by myself, ***, with no instructions and freezing ass cold weather. but i'm still stupid.

it is a pita to do it with the exhaust in the way. I just dropped mine and did the bushing at the same time. the bushing is harder to do on the b14 b/c of the mounting and I did mine in about 3 hours, but it was not cold outside. that takes longer when it is cold. I did a tranny mount for a buddy of mine in his impreza (sr20spy) and took me a few hours to do, and it was only like 6 bolts.

Oh, well if you did the shifter bushing also than don't feel bad. That thing is a PITA.

what's so hard about the bushing? it took like maybe 30 mins to do...and most of that was getting out from under the car to get the correct wrenches..

The install took me about 2 hours with help from my friend. Then later the two bolts holding the shifter to the body fell off and it took around 30 minutes to drop the cat, beat down the heatshield, torque the bolts back on and put it all together. I love doing the same repair the second time, it makes me feel like I'm in a pit crew it's so much faster than the first time.

so, i called stillen today to order a shift boot (always forget something...) and the sales guy asked me how my S.S. install went. (amazing how friendly people can be if they have a screen with all your info on it http://laf.cioe.com/~benbobbo/NonCGI/smilies/smile.gif ) i told him it really sucked and i would never do it again. this pissed him off. he put me on hold for ten minutes and then picked the fone up like he was answering a new call...WTF??? i explained to him that i am stupid, and stupid people take four times as long to do stuff, and he didn't believe it took me that long. like i deserve a prize for the slowest dumbass mechanic on earth..

i asked him what he thought about the effect of sawing off another two inches off the top of the shifter, and he said it MIGHT work..what do you guys think??

When you tally up the morons on the BB include me http://laf.cioe.com/~benbobbo/NonCGI/smilies/wink.gif . The SMC shifter took me about 6 hours to install. Although the boot studs did strip out on me, and I had to drill them out and replace them with bolts. But hey I did it myself and the mod kicks ass! Oh and how about the Energy bushing for a bang for the buck mod. huh? It totally makes a difference!

I have a freind that did this and also put a very short knob on top and he likes it alot.

yeah I cut mine and all you have to move to shift is fust alittle flick of the fingers and thumb! makes it even shorter throw. that metal is hard as shit get a new blade first.

ya, I have mine cut down about 1.5 inches and makes a pretty good diffrence. you have to use a shift knob with the allen wrench things though.
