: chain tensionner, just to be sure

First, I did use the search function but I didn't find any clear answer.

I'm in the process of putting my SR20DET back together after I painted the block. I'm now at the chain tensioner. I have read in the FSM that I have to push on the sleeve and get the hook on the pin. Done.

Now they say when reintalling it the hook will get off once bolted in place.

I did it all, bolted, but when I get it out just to see if it works, the hook is still on the pin.

Can you help me?

I just went threw this two weeks ago with two different cars. Once you install the tensioner with the hook on, it will not engage (pop off of the hook) until you turn the engine.

It helps when you have the valve cover off, then you can just put a 1" wrench on the intake or exhaust cam and put some pressure on the timing chain, then you can see the tensioner engage.

Ok thanks! I'll try it with the crank pulley!

i was a non-believer at one time, but surprisingly, once the engine is fired up and there's oil pressure at the tensioner, the hook does come undone.

Don't use the starter to unhook the tensioner. Always turn the crank with a socket. You run the risk of the chain jumping a tooth.

oops...sorry...bad advice by me...probably why my chain jumped two teeth during my cam installation. thanks for the enlightenment eric96ser!

I did it and it worked! I just rotated (with a socket) the crank by a few degrees and I saw the hook undo. Thanks guys!
