I have found that a smaller pipe wrench works wonders. My friend tried vice grips on his se-r and ended up hacking it off.
How to:
I positioned the pipe wrench in the middle of the shift knob (skinny part of knob), while the shifter was still attached to car. Tightening the pipe wrench as tight as possible, then just turn the wrench slowly. Be careful of your stereo, mine came off with no problems, probably took a total of 3 minutes(most of this was just finding a proper place to put the wrench. There are some teeth marks indented on the sides of the knob, but nothing tore and I reused the knob with the SMC.
I believe this worked, because how the pipe wrench mechanically works. It applies more pressure as you turn, a pair of pliers does not do this.
Find something that works better, until then I will swear by the pipe wrench! Sorry for the long post...
man you guys are wimps ;) mine came off by hand,
tip, get a strap wrench in sted of a pipe or vice grips then you wont wreck the shifter.

Ya, I just gave mine a good twist and it started turning. After that it was easy.

DO NOT YANK IT OFF....unless you want to screw up your shifter, just get a good grip and unscrew it off....real simple just have to break that glue seal in the first turn

I'll add my two cents of stupidity to this post also. I'm considering replacing the knob on my nx, do you guys think using glue is necessary when putting the new one on???

My shift knob, came with some screw-cap type things that fit in the knob and screwed on to my shifter. It was pretty solid.

if you dont want to ruin your shifter put a towel under the vice grips then squeeze as hard as you want
