Just wondering if any of you have ever gotten pulled for an "illegal" exhaust in the VA/MD/DC area? I was on the toll road near 66 when a state trooper pulled me over and started grilling me about my exhaust (it's a Greddy). He kept asking if it was a Nissan part and if it was for my car, I told him it was after market, but it was made for my car model. Just thought this crap only happened in Cali? Lucky for me he got a real call and had to zoom off so I didn't get a ticket.

I've known peeps to get pulled over for having a loud exhaust and that would be it. Why'd he pull you over? Just because it was after market? Sounds like that cops was on some real bitch ish. But if it was lfor the sound, just tell them you have a silencer. Maybe they might let you walk. I dont ***.

If I remember correctly there is a carb #, sticker ie SOMETHING that allows it. I know its legal. Carry that around if need be too.

I tried to be nice, saying that the exhaust was CARB legal, and that I passed emitions. He was trying to tell me that if nissan didn't make the exhaust then it wasn't allowed on my car. I know that is total crap because then all those people with Midas mufflers would be "illegal".

OnyxEros - I live out in Reston and usually am on the told road a few times a week.

chris...i was kidding about saying it exactly like that...but explaining it to them that its carb exempt will get you out of a ticket...if it doesnt then you get to make fun of him in court.

Huh! When I had my dual tip exhaust I got a ticket on my way to work on Liberty rd. Ticket was for repair to have it inspected. I take it to the shop and he laughs at me and signs the ticket and sends me on my way. :p I know there is a law out against it but I'm not sure how it's written. Sooo I really can't comment much farther. GTIRoids

I did get pulled over for an "illegal exhaust" so i took my car to an inspection station, the tech failed me because it was too big and too loud ( i had the stillen exhaust back then), the state inspection book says OEM or equivelent and MD did not have any requirements on decible levels for vehicle exhaust, so i got the state trooper's # for that particular shop, the next day i met the trooper at the shop, i drove my car on the lift, the trooper looked at my exhaust, looked at the tech and said "pass it sign the paper" :) the trooper even took pictures of my headers, he told me i cannot change my cat before 50K and i cannot rerout the system from OEM specs, that means no dual exhaust or side pipes.

A few months later i did see the trooper who wrote me the ticket, this time i had the greddy gleamming in his eye and all he could do is look with envy.........ha ha

On the Greddy it's located under the muffler or you can down load the CARB certification from the website.

Thanks for all the replys, I just hope to lay low, maybe I'll paint my muffler black (don't like chrome, actually don't like the big tips either) to look more stealth. Good thing he didn't look under the hood, since I have a turbo, I doubt he'd like that at all.

I dont think he can look under the hood if you dont let him, so dont let him!!!

just search for 3" exhuast and turbo. you'll find your options. Custom-made, apex, blitz...etc

custom made is the cheapest way to go...get some bends from jc whitney and throw a 3" muffler on there with a resonator...

My 3 inch exhaust is LOUD! I can refer U to the shop that did my exhaust. Although if I had to do it again, I would just purchase the N1. You could always buy my exhaust and I'll use the $ U give me to buy one. :D Joel
